actually build the model in the instruction booklet.  Until a recent post by
Ralph Hempel about the 8226 Mud Masher that sent me on a bit of a building
rampage.  The Mud Masher had been sitting around my house collecting dust,
just waiting to get parted out, so I built it.  It is a great little model,
easy to build, and even my too-cool-for-LEGO friends couldn't help but play
with it. * • <snipped stuff>
So I guess what I'm wondering is, how often do you build the model on the
cover of the box as opposed to building your own designs?  Do you usually take
models apart after you build them?  How do you display your models?

I almost invariably build the model first.  There is typically something there
that gives me a neat idea, or a springboard for similar ideas, and so forth.

The only exceptions to date are when I buy multiples of a set, and one other:
3038 Spyder Slayer.  I got halfway through the main models, and stopped,
because it really stunk.

Depending on the model, it may stay on display for a long time, it may come
apart in a matter of minutes.  My only Guarded Inn has been on display for over
a year now, but it's the only thing to survive that long on the shelf.  (A
close second is the Skull Eye's Schooner I got my wife for our last
anniversary)

Our models get displayed on a plain old bookcase, in front of the books.  About
once a month or so, I wander past and give them a couple shots of canned air to
keep the dust off. :)

(...) display. Every so often, I may move them around, or take them apart for "storage", but I haven't built a model from scratch since I was 10 or so (I'm 22 now). Unfortunately, I don't have much of anything resembling an imagination. I just like (...) (25 years ago, 13-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)
