I'm Through Coloring Inside the Lines for Awhile...

I'm the first to admit that I buy LEGO sets just for the parts.  I never
actually build the model in the instruction booklet.  Until a recent post by
Ralph Hempel about the 8226 Mud Masher that sent me on a bit of a building
rampage.  The Mud Masher had been sitting around my house collecting dust,
just waiting to get parted out, so I built it.  It is a great little model,
easy to build, and even my too-cool-for-LEGO friends couldn't help but play
with it. *

So then I decided to build the other set that I felt guilty about parting out,
the 8480 Space Shuttle.  Not quite the same experience, I must say.

I spent at least 14 hours of solid building time on this one over the course of
several days.  A good proportion of this time was spent on the three S's of
building: Sorting, Searching, and Swearing.  A small but annoyingly noticeable
amount of time was spent Squinting (I meant to say: "the _four_ S's") at the
instructions, trying to figure out exactly where to affix those two black 1x2
plates...

The instructions were technically 100% accurate, but could have been a bit
clearer at points.  I would have gone nuts trying to build this thing without
the reinforcement scaffolding plates that I slapped onto the underbelly during
construction to hold the thing together.

But I've got to hand it to TLG on this one.  What a great model!  And I was
amazed at the way the mechanisms slowly clicked into place.  How I could be
building something that I cannot understand the function of... until >click<
aha!!!  This kit almost goes out of its way to demonstrate new and unusual ways
to use oddball Technic elements.

I learned a lot by following the instructions on these two models.  But I'm
going back to just building my own stuff for awhile. **  It gets almost painful
when the limiting factor on how fast you can build is how quickly you can
locate the pieces and snap them together and flip the page and do it again...
I like the easier pace of thinking "how am I going to do that?" for a few
minutes between each satisfying >click<

So I guess what I'm wondering is, how often do you build the model on the cover
of the box as opposed to building your own designs?  Do you usually take models
apart after you build them?  How do you display your models?

*  =  My friends decided never to ride in a car made out of LEGO after seeing
that the Mud Masher's roll bars only come up to shoulder height on a minifig in
the driver's seat.  Roll that puppy over and they'll be looking for your head
somewhere back up the road, hot-dog!

**  =  Well, maybe I'll throw away the instructions _after_ I build that
X-wing!

(...) I always build the main model even if it is a very small set that I bought just for parts. My interest is in Technic and MindStorms. Even though I have been building my own models for quite some time, I can find a helpful building tip even in (...) (25 years ago, 12-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

(...) Does that make me the second? ;) (...) <snipped stuff> (...) I almost invariably build the model first. There is typically something there that gives me a neat idea, or a springboard for similar ideas, and so forth. The only exceptions to date (...) (25 years ago, 12-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

I, too, buy LEGO sets for the parts, but I normally build the main model anyway. If it's a small model, I try to build it without looking at the instructions. When the model is built, I tear it down again almost immediately and sort the pieces into (...) (25 years ago, 13-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)

I think 14 hours is typical build time for the Technic Space Shuttle. I actually was disappointed when it was finished, because I was having so much fun building it. The "Aha!" moments were wonderful! I intentionally took time to savor every step. (...) (25 years ago, 13-Nov-99, to lugnet.build)
