Thanks, Cary. What other single LEGO elements have you thought of exploiting in
this way?

Correct.

That's pretty neat-o. I hadn't realized there were other ways to assemble
headlight mosaics. I played around with that 4x4 pattern a little bit today
with Ldraw and made these two patterns:

http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/revbps/temp/cary_pattern_02.gif
I used a combination of 1x1 and 1x2 tiles to cover the edge studs. It doesn't
make for a smooth siding, but I still like the effect.
It seems more difficult to come up with new and varied patterns using the 4x4's,
though. Working with 2x2 perfect sqaures, you can easily just rotate the same
2x2 pattern 90 degrees, and attach any two 2x2 squares on any side. Patterns
just seem to flow.
Speaking of that, I've put up about 20 new patterns since my pattern page first
went online the other day:

I wonder too. But I feel like there's still a lot to explore with just the 2x2
sqaure-based patterns, so I'll probably continue to just focus on those for a
while. Let me know if you fiugre out any other configurations though.
