Wow. This is a startling discovery Brendan! Amazing patterns. I made a very
few samples of your ideas (most of my headlight bricks are tied up in a
model of New Westminster at the moment :-) ) and found you have to build
the sections in the right order otherwise you're trying to wriggle 2 studs
perpendicular to each other into place at the same time.
Larry is right too about the quilt pattern comparison!
Has anybody done this before? If not I think Brendan deserves an award of
some kind :-)

If we were to try a a giant "quilt" like the one I suggested in my response to Larry, it would be quite the task to actually fit all the 1,024-brick squares together.
