Wow. This is a startling discovery Brendan! Amazing patterns. I made a very few samples of your ideas (most of my headlight bricks are tied up in a model of New Westminster at the moment :-) ) and found you have to build the sections in the right order otherwise you’re trying to wriggle 2 studs perpendicular to each other into place at the same time.

Larry is right too about the quilt pattern comparison!

Yes, the build order is quite important. If we were to try a a giant “quilt” like the one I suggested in my response to Larry, it would be quite the task to actually fit all the 1,024-brick squares together. You would need to know in advance how many people were bringing how many components, and plan accordingly.

Has anybody done this before? If not I think Brendan deserves an award of some kind :-)

When Todd Lehman visited me a month or so ago and saw some of the headlight patterns I was working on, he pointed out that this building technique is used in The Ultimate LEGO Book. Specifically, page 66 shows this technique used to build a patterned coaster. I’ve had this book for a couple of years now, but I didn’t remember that coaster until Todd reminded me of it. But it must have been somewhere in my subconscious memory -- I even put the 1x8 tiles on the sides like the book shows.

At some point after working out these patterns for a while, I also happened to see that Stuart Immonen had created a simple “herringbone” pattern using this technique with Ldraw:

So while I can’t claim total originality with the building technique, I think I’ve stumbled onto the same basic idea others have had before me and just run with it.

A few years ago I did a little galaxy mosaic in this style, and it's still sitting on my shelf. I used gray, black, and white bricks, and made a spiral galaxy. I'm not sure if I came up with the technique myself or if I had seen it elsewhere. Eric (...) (21 years ago, 25-Jun-03, to lugnet.build)
