Hi Kevin,
Wow!!!  You have quite a talent!  Now, why is it that I have to read all
your postings 3 or 4 times?  If I understand right, you are able to
continually adjust the timing in each direction up to 45 degrees?  Other
valve gears that are variable do so by limiting the movement of the valve
and keep the timing the same.  Of course there is a throttle too.  That
would be mighty tough, I think, with a Lego valve.  Your solution is a
clever alternative.  Will there be more info on exactly how it is built?  I
think I can grasp most of it but the reverse mechanism is a little unclear
to me.   As a pneumatic engine enthusiast I really  appreciate this kind of
work.  Thanks for posting it.

Sorry about the posts not making sense.

You have no need to apoligize.  Your way of understanding is completely valid
and brings to light many new ideas way outside the scope of my thinking and that
of many others, I'm sure.  I believe I do understand your explaination.  So, it
makes sense enough.  I've always been one to take my time when learning
something.  :-)

The differential lets me make continuous timing adjustment through 360 degrees.

The two pistons are offset by 90 degrees, as are the switches.  The differential
lets you set the angle between the pistons and the switches.  If one of the
pistons is at 12:00 noon, then to make the engine go forward, you adjust that
piston's switch to be at 1:30.  To make the engine go backwards, set the
piston's angle at 10:30.  By setting the piston's switch at 12:00 when the
piston is at 12:00 noon, the engine cannot run.

I'll crank up some building instructions in the next few days.

Here are two pictures, the left image shows the engine running forward. The right image shows it running backwards. You can see that the differential case is turned about 90 degrees between the two images. (URL) still haven't worked on building (...)
