Ladies and gentlemen, cover your ears, the ship's whistle is about to
sound....

OK, now we've got that out of the way, I am happy to say that I've at last
finished the car ferry model I have been working on for months, and the pics
are available on Brickshelf (yes, they have been moderated) at:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=32115

Highlights include:

* Remarkably strong construction - you can pick this *heavy*, 29" long model
up by the bow and stern quite safely
* Two completely smooth-surfaced car lanes, each 8 studs wide and 7 bricks
high
* Multiple removable decks to give access to all passenger and crew areas
* Completely detailed enclosed passenger lounge with seating, snack bar,
bathrooms, children's play area, telephone. fire axe mounted behind glass
(my favorite detail!), tourist brochure racks, and more
* Open promenade deck with seating, life-jacket lockers, and derrick-mounted
inflatable boats for emergencies
* Crew bridge with two sets of instruments for navigation in either
direction
* Radar, radio, searchlights etc on the top deck
* Many, many details including navigation lights, roll indicator, wipers for
the bridge windows, etc etc etc
* Space for up to 16 small cars and trucks

This model is based on the smaller ships used by BC Ferries here on the
coast of British Columbia, and it made its debut (in a previous, less
detailed version) at the Trains 2002 train show in Burnaby last November.
Many visitors recognised it immediately, not just as a BC Ferry, but as "the
Bowen Island ferry" which pleased me, since that is indeed the specific
ferry I based it on. I even took a research trip on the ferry, and took 3
rolls of photos for reference! There are a few prototype photos in the BS
gallery - the Queen of Cumberland is the one the model is closest to, not
the Bowen Queen as you might expect :-).

(...) Wow! Love the strength test pics on this, too...it's obvious that your MOC can hold it's own. Did you do anything special to get it this strong? (el snippo) (...) Very nice detailing...both playability and model integrity are well done. (...) (...) (21 years ago, 26-Feb-03, to lugnet.boats)

(...) Another wonderful model. I like the "compression" on this one; it looks a lot like the little car ferry model I had as a kid! (It's a Great Lakes thing.) Excellent layered construction, as well; this is in the best tradition of Town and Train (...) (21 years ago, 26-Feb-03, to lugnet.boats)

Wow! Thank is fantastic Kevin! Being someone who grew up on the West Coast of BC and have had many rides on several ferries from the BC Ferries fleet, you captured this boat amazingly! Any thoughts on this being your next Bricksmith set? (...) (...) (21 years ago, 27-Feb-03, to lugnet.boats)

Gee it's big! :^) Awesome model! The removable decks are nice, the detail is great, and the ferry reminds me of home (Texas, not BC). I especially like the homemade rafts. -Stefan- (21 years ago, 27-Feb-03, to lugnet.boats)
