Recent events have put the issue of image hosting in the spotlight. There are a lot of choices out there, from popular sites like Brickshelf and MOCpages to newer sites like MOCShow, YouBrick, BrickImage, and even commercial, non-LEGO sites like Flickr. All of these sites provide an invaluable service to the LEGO fan community - a place to host your images.

The LEGO Ambassadors would like to ask you for your input on what you would want from an image-hosting site:
  • What would make for the “ideal” image-hosting site for LEGO fans?

  • What type of features/services would you like to see on such a site?

  • How much would you be willing to pay for these services, if free image hosting was not an option?

Note: This post is not intended to start a debate about which existing image hosting website is better. As fellow LEGO fans, we just want to ask you for your thoughts and ideas regarding the viewing and showcasing of your LEGO creations. These ideas will not be forwarded to The LEGO Group, who have publicly and clearly stated that they will not own, nor run such a service. Your comments will be available here for others in the community to view - and hopefully utilize - in building and improving image hosting sites for all LEGO fans.

(...) Support for hosting LDraw or LEGO Digital Designer and associated files. In other words, models stored in DAT, LDR, MPD, or LXF format as well as the POV-Ray files and others used to produce renderings and custom instructions. Jim (17 years ago, 4-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

(...) I think this discussion has already happened. A lot of people gave their input in the last few weeks following the potential closing of Brickshelf. It boggles my mind why the ambassadors would want to restart such a discussion merely to have (...) (17 years ago, 4-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

(...) Support for LEGO Creator World and Model files in addition to those mentioned by Jim DeVona. I know that's a really old program, but that doesn't mean no one uses it anymore. Support for .PDF files and option to view them as web pages, one (...) (17 years ago, 4-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)

(...) a simple interface like brickshelf. sign in, upload, done. (...) the ablity to change folder names not just discriptions have an account with user information "I.E. real name, city, state, age, club affiliations" that can be made public if (...)   Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

(...) There will never be an ideal image-hosting site since everyone has diffrent opinion on what that is :) But MY view on a ideal image-hosting site is like Brickshelf are today but with some added features like; 1. Owner being able to put comment (...) (17 years ago, 5-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

My thoughts: 1.Should limit non-paying users to only upload files (of any type) of a certain maximum file size (not image size, file size). 2.Should limit non-paying users so that they can only upload a certain size of files total (i.e. all the (...) (17 years ago, 5-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

(...) I agree with most of the comments others have written. I would also like to add that I like the way Brickshelf allows you to see a lot of images on the same page – without excessive scrolling. When I'm browsing, I can see 30 images on the same (...) (17 years ago, 5-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

(...) I just want Brickshelf to survive, that's all. If Brickshelf can be improved with more features, great. If Brickshelf needs to charge fees, fine. But for me, I don't want another Johnny-come-lately, just what has worked in the past and will (...) (17 years ago, 5-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

I'd like to see: 1. Not only the ability to tag photos with a pre-selected list of keywords (as BrickShelf does) but see only folders/photos tagged with those words (like MOCPages). Also filtering by filetype. If I don't use LDraw (for instance), I (...) (17 years ago, 5-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

What's really being asked, I think, is more than just image hosting. That's a cheap commodity through various services. If it was just about putting images on the web, that problem's been solved. But it's more than that. I think at least three (...) (17 years ago, 6-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX) !
Re: Your Thoughts on Image Hosting Sites...

(...) I'd like to see support for pictures as well as LDRAW and Track Designer Files. Automatic reduction and file size optimisation, or just an outright ban on people uploading large pictures or BMP formats. Thumbnailing for galleries. Mid-size (...)
