To me, this is a topic that the Ambassadors should be looking into and using
their influence on. I am very grateful that they are polling the community to
be sure that they have everyones input before acting. Just reading through the
other posts would not give them a full and clear picture. I think this one post
has restored my belief in them as a group and their willingness to make things
better for all. (though it is clear that not all Ambassadors are equally
professional)
Here is my wish list:
|
How much would you be willing to pay for these services, if free image hosting
was not an option?
|
Currently, everything is free. I think it is important to start with very low
fees and move them up each year, as necessary to cover the costs. Putting a
larger fee (even $4 / month) may seem too large and send many members away (or
to one site or the other). Starting small, would keep them in. Increasing as
necessary would not be noticed much, and would ensure that no site is
over-charging.
|
What type of features/services would you like to see on such a site?
|
Im just going to say, support for all LEGO related files. Does RCX or
Mindstorms have special files?
Icon driven main page (like Bricklink), so I can go straight to where I want to
go without seeing kids building multi-color guns out of LEGO.
More restricts on picture uploads (or a misc category) to filter out pictures
where putting a minifig in a non-LEGO related picture, does not make it a LEGO
picture.
Ill second the suggestion box, preview picture, picture comments, and ability
to contact members.
Id like to second automatic picture resizing to 800x1200 or so, unless the
folder is tagged with Wallpaper. Desktop Wallpaper tagged folders could be
limited to 2048x1536 or widescreen equivalent.

What would make for the ideal image-hosting site for LEGO fans?
|
Tricky here...if you allow free hosting with paid hosting, it would have to be
done right. If you only have paid hosting, this balance isnt a problem. I
think there should be a site, or a section of a site that has free hosting (for
kids and those who are only casually interested).
Mostly, I just want a categorized / organized site where I can share and see
what I want and nothing that I dont. This entails a good search feature and
the options to add the wording and select categories on the upload side. It
also entails a quick-click icon main page.
Thanks for asking about this,
Scott

| (...) I think this discussion has already happened. A lot of people gave their input in the last few weeks following the potential closing of Brickshelf. It boggles my mind why the ambassadors would want to restart such a discussion merely to have (...) (17 years ago, 4-Aug-07, to lugnet.ambassadors, FTX)
