Whats really being asked, I think, is more than just image hosting. Thats a
cheap commodity through various services. If it was just about putting images on
the web, that problems been solved.
But its more than that.
I think at least three separate audiences need to be served... audiences that
Brickshelf has served in the past, but may not in the future.
User A: Wants to store LEGO-related images online so he can link to them from
other places (web forums, blogs, etc). This person wants to have his images
available on the web so he can distribute the URL. He may not necessarily care
if anyone sees the images except from specific areas where he posts links. Image
might be of a MOC or avatar or banner or inspiration. Goal: to be able to link
to an image.
User B: Wants to store LEGO-related images online in a place where they will
get maximum attention. Generally MOCs. Prefers a centralized system that is
frequented by many people (specifically LEGO enthusiasts). He may or may not
link to it from other sites (like forums, blogs, his own web site, etc.). Goal:
To be widely seen with minimum effort or promotion.
User C: Wants to view LEGO-related images. Prefers a system that would allow
him to focus on MOCs or other images that interest him, with the minimum effort
in searching or browsing. Goal: view images for entertainment or inspiration.
These three audiences do not necessarily have the same requirements. For
example, User A might be content to use Flickr... but Users B and C might not
find Flickr meets their needs. Forcing User A to use a solution to meet Users B
and Cs needs is not practical, and vice versa.
Users B and C would prefer some type of solution like Brickshelf, but if
Brickshelf eventually does go away, they might not be well served. To date,
Brickshelf has served all three audiences, but as weve seen, that could change
at any time. So to me, it definitely seems like theres still a need for a
broader solution.
The core question (to me) seems to be, How can User C easily see User As
images? User A will host images wherever they can... Brickshelf, MOCPages,
Flickr, Photobucket, their own host, etc. Therefore, some system to collate the
image URLs and meta data (if any) like keywords or categories from widely
separated sources is indicated. I dont think any single web site is (or should)
be responsible for hosting the entirety (or even majority) of LEGO fan images.
So, hosting per se isnt an issue in my mind - the real project is collecting
the data for easy distribution to interested viewers.

| Recent events have put the issue of image hosting in the spotlight. There are a lot of choices out there, from popular sites like Brickshelf and MOCpages to newer sites like MOCShow, YouBrick, BrickImage, and even commercial, non-LEGO sites like (...)
