Hey all LUGFAQ fans,
Well, it happened. I have acquired a lot of short-term duties at work (1)
and my Scotland vacation is coming up fast, so I am unable to continue work
on the FAQ for at least a few months. I should be able to again dedicate
time to the FAQ around the end of August -- I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
There is good news, however. What work I did put into the FAQ is available
at my site on Geocities (2) and I encourage others to get a copy and get
involved. And, I'm keeping my (admittedly sparse) work logs, so any
questions about what I've done on the FAQ or anything dealing with my
general sanity are welcome.
To date, I have collected 202 FAQ items, 94 of which still need answers.
All have had minor editing, but some still need work. I have also slurped
the Fibblesnork Auction and Shipping FAQ and Kerry Garrison's Mindstorms
FAQ, and work is currently being done to slurp the LDraw FAQ. There's
probably a few things wrong with the FAQ headers; I've tried to be
consistent, so hopefully it shouldn't be too big of an issue to automate
fixes.
Included in the file lugnet_faq.zip are the Perl scripts (3) I cobbled
together to build the HTML. Specifically: the script make_dirs.cmd will use
LWP::Simple to download info on LUGNET's directory structure and newsgroup
charters; the script make_html.cmd will recurse the directories and make the
actual HTML goodies.
Keep the FAQ going!
Cheers,
- jsproat
1. They have me writing CGI scripts for the delivery of software builds to
internal testing groups and other distribution channels -- woo-hoo, I looks
like fun.
2. <URL:http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Horizon/5249/lugnet/> I
would recommend downloading the file lugnet_faq.zip instead of
whole_thing.html due to the way Geocities plays with HTML files after
they're uploaded.
3. I'm using the ActivePerl build based upon Perl version 5.005_03 on
Windows NT 4.0, so Your Mileage May Vary.
