Adrian,

I am interested in exploring your idea for video like the one Eric and Jeff
from RTL showed.

Are you thinking about having LUGs and individuals create non-animated videos
of their work? I think this would be a great idea.

That's exactly what I'd like :-)

LTCs (and LUGs too) could film their events, layouts, as RTL Toronto, and
add sound, music, maybe even a minifig in the layout giving a tour.

Something like what Eric did would be cool. An idea I've got is the
evolution of a model from its sketch or the first brick put down to it's
final completion with some music.  A full song, singing or instrumental,
would be in it.

A short LEGO music video, like those you see on TV for Cadillac with the Led
Zep music clip playing, could be an idea.

A min and max time allowed would be a topic to cover.

As for the filming video from the computer screen. There is one basic reason
for this. People are submitting their entries on CD-Rom. Since no VCR player I
know is capable of showing CD-Roms I must find a way to convert the Computer
CODEC version to a Television format. This is easier said than done.
Unfortunately, because of the pethora of codecs and video formats for the
coputer it is not as easy as it should be to dump a computer video to the VCR.

Yea, I understand.  One though was taking all those CDs and putting them on
a single DVD.  DVD burners have come way down in price and one manufacturer,
Sony, has got smart and offers a burner that can do both DVD-R or DVD+R.
(I'll be getting my hand on that one!)  With all the films were on a DVD,
we'd only need a laptop w/ a DVD-ROM and the means to hook it up to the
projector. Who would do all the editing to a single disk is something to cover.

As to what file format (mpeg, avi, etc.), suggestions from the animation
community as to what would be best viewing would be very helpful.  Should
more than one format be used on the disk?

There were only two animators that had to have their video shown this way. I
have appologized to each for not having the equipment necessary to make the
conversion. Jared Gilbert offered to do this for me, but owing to the lateness
of the announcement and the late deadline for entries, I only asked Jared to
provide this service for the Comedy Competition. He was gracious to do so and
sent me the video tapes just in time for me to add to them and leve for the
convention.

I have considered making it a requirement for entries to only be received on
VHS or Mini-DV format, but many animators have expressed problems with this.
Many do not have the gear necessary to do this. Also its not just a gear issue,
but also the video software programs used may not be able to take a persons
files and output them to TV without the original hardware and software. I.e.
people sending me their files will not convert to video no matter what I do.
Also there is the issue of 3 different video formats. America and Canada use
the NTSC standard while Europe uses PAL and Australia uses SECAM. If anyone is
willing to help me convert from one format to NTSC, I welcome their
participation in the organizing committee.

I appreciate these comments and I welcome additional comments from others. I
endavor to try to continue to improve the format and outlet for animators
through the Animation Festivals.

Hello people,

Quite a few animators who sent their work to BricksWest, but were unable • to
be there (as a result of living in different states, countries or even
continents) are waiting for some report on the festival. Anybody who's • been
there: how did it go? No technical problems? Lots of attendees? Which • films
were big hits, which were regarded as not so good?

We'd really really like to know!

Stefan.

I got a real kick about it; the ani was great work.

There are some tweaks that need to be done that most have already spoke of.

One thing that really got me was the formatting of the ani itself.  Before
presentation it was mentioned that some of the movies submitted (QT and
Windows Media) had to be filmed off a monitor to be shown on tape and that
IMO degraded some of the image quality.  You couldn't see the monitor itself
but could make out it was being recorded off the screen of one.

I'm hoping to see an entry catagory for works like the one Eric Sophie and
RTL Toronto did for the BW 2004.  I've got an idea for one myself.
