Okay, I think I understand.  So, right now the submit ratings button on a
thread display page is useless and serves no purpose, as I understand you.

nono -- it's not useless at all -- what the button simply means is "apply all
of the radio button selections currently visible on this HTML page."

I guess we are all resigned to submit individual ratings on a per-message
basis (not a complaint, however).

You -can- rate messages one at a time, but it's not required, no.

I was thinking that the submit ratings
button on a thread display page could be used to submit ratings for multiple
messages within that thread.

It can be used for that, yes, but it expects you to mark your selections on
the same HTML page as the button you click.  For example, you could view the
following 17-message thread these two different ways:

   http://www.lugnet.com/space/?n=1729&t=i&v=a
   http://www.lugnet.com/space/?n=1729&t=f&v=a

and mark the ratings on that one large page, and click the "Submit Ratings"
button at the bottom, and it'll apply all 17 at once.

Similarly, you can walk through messages 10 or 20 at a time and rate them
in one fell swoop...

I guess I was thinking incorrectly.

Maybe you're seeing the same weird thing that Larry saw a few days ago.  What
web browser are you using?  Does the changes you submit not "take hold" only
on large threads or also on small threads?  I wonder if some web browsers are
overwhelmed by the sheer number of radio buttons...
