This sounds like a modem issue. Modems have an escape character (+ by
default) which if typed three times in a row will get you into command
mode (where you can issue commands, like ATDT or ATZ, etc.)
Most modems will only recognize the escape sequence if at least a half
second or so delay preceeds and follows the command sequence. It sounds
like yours doesn't check for delays around the sequence. You may be
able to configure the modem to do so, or to disable the escape sequence
completely.
Oh, and as for why spaces which cause the problem... the news posting
form uses the application/x-www-form-urlencoded MIME type, which
specifies that spaces are to be turned into plus signs. So whenever you
typed three spaces into a form, it was being turned into three plus
signs by your browser. When your modem sees the plus signs, it goes
into command mode, thus disrupting your connection.
