Well, I embellished a *little*. And interpreted "net clog" as "clogged
router". And forgot to re-iterate the possibility of multiple issues.

It takes about 3 seconds to establish the NNTP connection between my laptop and lugnet.com and then I can scan and download the 39 groups I'm subscribed to in just a couple of minutes.
