Ooh!  (As in Uh oh)  I just realized -- but don't have a solution for yet --
LDraw .DAT files posted through the web interface are going to wrap at 79
columns.  Hmm.

What if WRAP=VIRTUAL were used in the TEXTAREA tag instead of WRAP=HARD when
posting to lugnet.cad.dat?  That oughta do it, except (a) now the paragraphs
of text wouldn't wrap, and (b) it wouldn't work if the ng name were typed
into the Newsgroups edit-box by hand.

Another possibility might be to "line-join" incomplete (wrapped) DAT data
lines after the body of the article is received.  But that could get pretty
gunky detection-wise, and it would probably even be easier just to have a
simple form-upload for DAT files, and feed that to the article-posting guts.

Safest thing is probably this:

1) Emit WRAP=VIRTUAL in the TEXTAREA tag when composing an article intended
   for lugnet.cad.dat.

2) Fold non-DAT lines at 78 columns after receiving content.

The code for #1 is trivial, and the code for #2 needs I think to be written
anyway, because not all browsers support WRAP=HARD.

An extra measure of checking might be to echo back the entire formatted
article (just prior to injection) on a web page to the user for
confirmation.  OTOH someone would probably need a pretty keen eye to detect
wraps of lines 81-83 characters wide, and such a feature might give a false
sense of security.

Well, enough flip-flopping for now....

(...) I like how this is handled in Deja News -- the user is presented with a choice to "send without preview" or "preview message". At the message preview page is another set of choices -- "send" and "return to editing". As for the line wraps, it's (...) (26 years ago, 13-Oct-98, to lugnet.admin.general)
