Hi Travis,
sorry, but FTX/Perl isn't _my_ invention ;-)
I could imagine it has something to do with Perl (AYMK, LUGNET is based upon
Perl). The backslash in combination with a char is a so-called "control
character" in Perl and also used to generate other special characters (like the
backslash itself).
It's similar to HTML and the less-than-char < (or the greater-than-char >) for
tags. To really print them to the screen, you have to use < and >
respectively.
But it's just a thought.
