Occasionally I post a message which never shows in my inbox for authentication?
Am I alone?

It could be my fault this time.

It's very unlikely. There is no connection that I am aware of between
authentication mails  (the generation and mailing of these mails is done by the
server, completely automatically) getting lost in transit (or not being
generated correctly) and people requesting cancels.

Scott is not alone in not always getting authentication mails, There appears to
possibly be something amiss in the system. There have been several reports
lately of this. Todd is aware of at least one of them and actively
investigating. This is the right place to bring up others, too so that he has
awareness of them and can investigate.

I broke the rules and caused an entire
subthread to be censored.

LUGNET does not practice censorship. The posts were all cancelled at the request
of the authors, I've saved all the emails, as I always do. It is true that I
suggested that they be cancelled but that is always a request or suggestion. I'd
like to see the entire thread reposted, just without the FUT to loc.uk. FUTs to
other places from deep within .debate threads are usually a good idea.

The odd thing is, although I was unaware of
some of the nuances, I did it on purpose.  And yet, I'm still here.

An off-topic post is a pretty minor transgression compared to repeated ToS
violations, and giving no indication of any willingness to abide by the ToS in
future.

Why is it that someone like Richard banned for life, and I'm not?

Richard is not banned for life as far as I am aware. There is an important
distinction between "banned until agreement to abide is reached, but there is no
indication of that agreement ever coming" and "forever", in my view.

Seems
a bit arbitrary to me.  Perhaps it's time to let him back in.  His comments
injected a certain dark twisted sense of humor into .debate that in my
opinion has been replaced by just plain meanness.

Well that's certainly your opinion which you are entitled to but I don't think
that the quality of contribution is a metric by which to measure the seriousness
of a ToS transgression.

(...) Here's a link to a post by Derek R. in which, in passing, he mentions what sounds like the same or a similar issue. David K's reply also mentions what sounds like potential difficulty. (URL) (20 years ago, 27-May-04, to lugnet.admin.general)
