Welcome to the world of LEGO & robotics! Right out of the box, 700 parts is more than enough to build interesting robots. I think you should save your money until AFTER you PLAY with your MindStorms. It is quite possible that there is a versioning problem here. The cygwin on arthurdent is reasonably new (August?), but not exactly cutting edge.
