Kingston is almost on the way between LHR and LGW but it'a an awful place to get to and from by car and you'd need to allow at least 5 hours (2 hours to fight through the traffic, park and find the shop, 1 hour to shop, and 2 hours to Gatwick, (...) (21 years ago, 30-Nov-04, to lugnet.loc.uk)

If I am understanding the problem correctly here, you should look into using DCC from the RCX. If I do understand your problem, here is a link to a site where a guy tackles using RCX with LEGO trains, and controls them uniquely well with the help of (...)
