To do the vehicle scene, I bought a large sheet of fluorescent pink/magenta art paper and photographed the models on it (and also making sure the paper was evenly lit). I have actually built these and haven't had access to a good camera, maybe tomorrow. They actually run very well forward, being pulled, but tend to bind up a bit running backwards, being pushed. The renderings are slightly different from what I (...) (22 years ago, 9-Jan-03, to lugnet.trains)

__SCOUT and __RCX behave as you guessed. There are also defines for __CM and __SPY for spybotics and cybermaster targets, respectively.
