That is just incredible and driven with a battery box. I was expecting at
least two RCX bricks. Great piece of mechanics. I always enjoy Lego that
really does something. This sure fills the bill on that count.

Marvellous. Did you base it on a similarly functioning machine? I haven't seen
anything nearly as elegant in lego building before, and I am really glad I
peeked outside the robotics newsgroups today!

It looks remarkably simplistic yet elegant. I do have one very minor
problem, however, with your javascript slideshow thingy. It tends to
advance two frames, instead of one, could you please add conventional links
like in a folder on brickshelf or somewhere?
Also, could you post a second video clip without the music - it is nice, of
course - but I prefer to hear the noises the gears and bricks make as they
mesh and click against each other.

I remember seeing a knitting machine where a carriage travelled about a metre
back and forth. Is it possible to transfer the mechanism to a larger frame such
as this, to make a scarf or a blanket?

Thank you all for the compliments! There were a few questions posted and I'll
try to answer them all here rather than individually.
This machine is not directly modeled after a similar device. However, I learned
a great deal about knitting from an ancient machine I bought on ebay. This ebay
machine is similar in style to these:

and you've seen the results:)
By far the hardest part of this project was also the simplest; the latch hooks.
These hooks were incredibly difficult to get right and, after some monstrous
iterations, I'm quite pleased w/how simple they turned out to be.
Although I'm sure it could be done, getting this mechanism to work for a blanket
or scarf would be difficult.
As for an additional video with unedited sound, that will have to wait. This
thing has been picked up by Gizmodo.com and I'm having bandwidth issues.

I've been lurking here at lugnet for ages, but this one pulled me out of the
woodwork and motivated me to sign up for posting.
For some time, I've been noodling over how to do a knitting machine or a fully
mechanical loom. Haven't worked anything out yet, there a lot of puzzles to
solve to make one work. Your machine is very impressive.

When I saw this machine running on only a battery box, your name came
to mind. I will never forget what you did to your fellow contestants on the
monkey bars. One battery box and even shut it off at the end of the run. All
