Ok, everyone... I'd like to organize a contest for creating non-military
Space vehicles. The first thing I need to do is come up with categories.
Here are the ones I can think of:
Personal - Space Cars, Family vehicles, etc.
Commercial - Moving vans, shuttles, FedEx vans, freighters
Service - Police, Medical, Sanitation, etc.
I figure I'd have minifig and microfig scale for each category, and then
one single overall winner.
Sound good? Do I need more categories?

Sounds great! I'd love to see lots of people enter a contest like
this--great opportunity for lots of small unique models. (Well, I doubt
a freighter would be small, but the rest would probably be smaller than
most other space fighters, capital ships, etc.)

Those sound great.. the only other thing might be an "Other" catagory, one
that features anything else that is undeniably non-military. And it might be a
catch-all category for anything remaining or else there's too many categories.
Now... what to build? :-)

At least one more category is needed: Movie inspired creations.
As I was building a personal transportation vehicle I came up with a problem:
This enging is just too cool to hide away inside a vehicle. As I continued
building, I realized that my creation would be best used a a podracer,
so...Movie inspired creations seems like a logical category. I'm certain that
I'm not the only one who will have this problem, either.

Ok, then... I accept the proposal for an extra category for Movie Inspired
creations. The only stipulation I'm going to make is that these creations
must be Original MOCs. I've seen all the MOC versions of X-Wings and
the Enterprise. I want to see stuff that is original! I don't mind if your MOC
is -inspired- by or in the -style- of something in a movie, but please no
direct copies of the movie stuff we've all seen 100 times.
I'll let this thread run another few days before I declare the official start of
my contest.
There will be prizes! (Though nothing terribly expensive, mind you.)

I might suggest "Dioramma"(sp?) or "Interiors". A bunch a stuff at once. <grin>
For all the cargo bay, space ports, and fighter prep' type models.
|
|
|
A rule that I would like to suggest. No starwars stuff. Anyone here
disaggree with this?
|
|
|
Are cad models acceptable? I have some cool ideas for ships that I could
build and enter...
Also as well as minifig and microfig scales, dont forget a class for
ships that are at scales larger than minifig.

I think that this was covered here:

Where would one put spacecraft that move lots of people at once like
space buses, cruise spaceships (what I am planing to model) and so on?
|
|
|
Well, my focus is going to be on the craft itself. However, in the judging, I
will consider the presentation of the vehicle. If you go a lot of work
building a scene around it, then you'll definitely get more points.
I plan on having some rules drafted up later today.

Sure thing. I only ask that entries be made into .jpg before they are sent
to me.
I suppose I can add a maxifig scale, though I don't see very many of
those floating around.

Andy,
1) go buy a disposable camera if you don't have a regular 35mm
1a) OR, check your yellow pages for a place that rents digital cameras.
They do exist. If you are able to do this, skip to step 4.
2) get the film developed and have them make you a photodisk
3) take the photodisk to one of those internet-by-the minute places
(they're everywhere)
4) upload to a free site like Brickshelf or Geocities.
5) Show us your stuff.

Just curious: Are you willing to consider space stations? Not bases
(ground installations), but "2001:ASO", or C.J.Cherryh type orbital
stuff? Otherwise I'm going to have to put engines on a research station
:) It's - uh - a *science* ship. Yeah, that's the ticket :)

...I would like to see a 'microfig' scale category using the scale I use on the Intuise
http://www.wildlink.com/lego/jain/ships/sde_intuise/index.htm (aka, a person = 1 1x1
cylinder +2 round plates) (idea borrowed from Sproaticus who borrowed it from others :-) I
like working in that scale (at least at the moment :-)
...I would call anything smaller scale 'nanofig' (but then again, that's just me)
...you can go back to ignoring me now...

I have "microfig" and "nanofig" lumped into the same category because,
again, I can't afford to give that many different prizes.
Happy building,

Before I go building this huge idea I had, I wanted to know if it is a valid
entry. My idea is a moving "gravball" stadium. Would this be considered a
commercial vehicle?

That depends on how you build it, according to the rules I have laid out.
If you build a spaceship with a gravball stadium in it, then that's ok.
If you build a stadium and slap engines on it, then that's not ok.
I'm having a -vehicle- contest, and people keep trying to suggest
-buildings- to put in it. Engines on a building don't make it a spaceship,
so take that into consideration.

No, no. It's definately a vehicle. Let me draw it in ASCII.

I have till first week of August to build this thing, right? Maybe I can use
it for a civilian vehicle in BrikWars when I am finished photographing it for
the contest. :) BOOOOOOM.
Damn, no free weekends. Looks like it's weekday nights for me. I need more
