Thanks so much!
I always considered my building style to be stuck in the '70's and 'early '80's
:)
I have fun with it, tho. And i'm basically doing 2 shows 'back-to-back'
One this upcoming weekend in Etobicoke, and one the first weekend in June which
is a 'secret' ;)
Take care

Terrific work! I'm sorry that I didn't see this thread until now, or I'd have
commented sooner. I don't go in for LEGO much lately, but Classic Space will
forever hold a special classic space in my heart.
Thanks for sharing!

Truely wonderful work! I really like the contrast between the classic space and
the modern building styles.

I set up my WinXP VM with BrixCC and connected one of my RCX's to my copperized
monorail track.
I wrote a quick NQC program that would control the speed and direction of the
monorail train via a rotation sensor connected to the RCX.
It's not as wonderful as Mark Reilly's LDCC but it works on a 'regular' RCX
firmware.
Future state is for maybe 'public' control of one of the monorail loops at a
show.
We'll see about that
Here's a vid-
<https://youtu.be/9WkRL5cVUZ4>
There are deficiencies as discussed in the vid. I'll work them out (hopefully)
and keep everyone here updated ;)
(Whoever is still coming here)

I 'finished' (is it ever done?) lighting up my Classic Space Layout and decided
to set it up in my living room.
I took some pics and posted them on my Flickr channel -
<https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjzD1sW>
Also took a few vids and put them on my YouTube Channel -
A 'minifig' camera view on the layout -
<https://youtu.be/sZIOlxJpamw>
My discussion about the layout -
<https://youtu.be/lK6mqiOPwow>
There are a whole slew of other previous vids on my YouTube channel that show
how I got to this point.
A very special thanks to Rob Hendrix for his LifeLites lighting kits that I used
extensively in this layout.
<https://lifelites.com/>
I should probably do a tally to see what the final number is for LifeLites kits
in the layout...
Here's a quick listing off the top of my head -
Landing pads - 13 x 2 kits each = 26
Monorail Station - 2 kits
Habitat - 1 kit
Rocket Launch - 2 kits
Ships - 3 advanced kits (so far - soon to me more)
Tower - floors 0-3 (ground ops) - 8
Tower - floors 4-9 (landing pad/monorail demarc) - 2
Tower - floor 10 (observation) - 2
Tower - floor 11 (space ops) - 2
Tower - floor 12 (exec - cake topper) - 2
Total - 50 LifeLite basic/advanced kits. (think 5 of the 50 are advanced)
times (mostly) 8 LED's each - 400 LED lights
That number is high because not all the kits have 8 LED's connected. But most
do.
Thankfully I've been acquiring the LifeLite kits over the years since Rob
started making them, because that would be hard on the bank if I bought them all
at once :)
Anyway, the evolution of the OBBCSL has been so much fun over the years, and I'm
not done with it yet.
That said, the 'big' changes are now mostly complete and it's finally, after
12ish years of updating it, where I wanted it to be from the beginning.
Hope everyone is doing well.

Yeah, I wanted a project during Covid and this was as good as it gets for me...
And no one else posts here anymore - not even that guy talking about monthly
dinners...
So with much further ado, I've been building and reviewing all LEGO space sets,
starting at 6800 and working up sequentially to 6991
I'll probably then go do the other sets in other ranges - possibly going to the
3 digits first (as its classic...)
And I'm not close to being done yet...
But here they are, in a playlist on YouTube
<https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5ukKfkqCrJNmzS__R6fF4lvYOIR7F2KP>
Have a boo, and drop me a line to say hi. Probably not here as no one replies
here anymore :(
Hope everyone is doing well.
Stay safe

This started as a real-life build with my son that then got embellished in LDD
and rendered with bluerender.
The design is a departure from my typical Neo-Classic-Space builds. Its form
felt much more organic and the green/dark-gray color scheme felt like it
should belong to a reptilian race of aliens. It is armed with 2 powerful
anti-capital ship cannons that draw power directly from the main engines. it
has twin light blasters mounted on the tip of each sponson as well as 4 guided
missiles. The cockpit detaches and serves as an escape pod. It is a compact
design with only 230 bricks and as such I had to abandon my general rule of
including retractable landing gear in my designs.
After it was built, it did feel like it subconsciously drew inspiration from the
new-battlestar-galactica cyclon raiders.
I also rendered it as a Blactron ship which felt like it could have fit the
general theme.
A couple of more pics at brickshelf
Enjoy,

Just a reminder that the Ontario Brick Builders (k, just me) will be displaying
the Classic Space layout at the Boats, Models and Train show at the Hamilton
Steam Museum tomorrow and Sunday. The public hours for both days are from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m..
Address--
900 Woodward Ave
Hamilton, ON
L8H 7N2
This is a free event for the public, so if you want to spend time checking out
the craftsmanship of old steam engines built 150(ish) years ago, or want to take
a ride on a miniature train, or just want to hang with me for a while, come on
down!
I am planning on live streaming the event around 1 p.m. Check my facebook feed!
Hope to see you there!

This is the one I've been personally trying to get into for a few years now.
Not just because it's in my own 'back yard', but this place is one of my
favourite places to visit--
The Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology National Historic Site
<https://www.hamilton.ca/attractions/hamilton-civic-museums/hamilton-museum-steam-technology-national-historic-site>
Sandy and I took Josh a few years back for the Boats, Models and Trains event---
<https://www.hamilton.ca/attractions/events-calendar/boats-models-and-trains?view=0>
and it was a blast. They have a relatively large outdoor permanent train
layout. I don't know the scale, but you can ride the train cars--I think its 8
inches or something.
They also have a raised train track layout at the same scale, on which a
'scratch built' functioning steam engine will pull a few people around--that was
awesome!
The model boat builders set up a temporary pond, and kids can RC boat race and
stuff.
The Meccano guys have been there in the past, and their creations are pretty
great.
But the tour of the pump house...
I was like Iain with his trains...
<https://museumshamilton.com/#/pano/hamilton-civic-engine-deck-controls>
And, also knowing the history of Hamilton a bit, and knowing the role this pump
house played 150ish years ago...
K, enough gushing about the location.
So I'm bringing the CSL to their Boats, Models and Train event--it's 2 days--the
25 and 26th of May. Public hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. You can do
the other stuff as well, and get a tour of the pump house.
I'm going to try it out this year with the layout, mostly because we don't have
alotta 'lead time' to get others signed up for a bigger display, but I really
hope this one is successful, not only so we can have a bigger turnout next year,
but the person I'm working with would love to see basically an 'all lego' event
in 2020 that they can market it and it'd just be us :)
Now that would be awesome!
Anyway, I'm excited, and if you are interested in displaying on May 25/26th, let
me know and I can check with the organizer--I'd love to see you. Our display
will be inside the building, which gets locked up at night with security and all
that.
As an aside, I didn't want to do more than 4-5 shows a year when I started
getting back into it, and I'm already at 4 now--2 done, 2 confirmed for May. I
did these shows to see how the CSL can be packed and how quickly it can be set
up.
I'm tentative for the Greater Toronto Train Show in October, so that's 5. We'll
see what else we can do. Leaping back into this, I already have around the same
number of shows this year that we used to do back in the day.
Dave K

I'm going to go all rtlT 'old school' on this one.
I contacted the organisers at the Greater Toronto Train Show and they would like
to have us at their train show October 5 and 6th in Brampton, Ontario.
Now I'm ONLY going to do this show if I get some people committed to bringing
*something* for displaying. I will be bringing the CSL, so we already have a 5
by 7.5 spot filled.
I'm thinking about a 10 x 20 foot display area, set up all old school with
tables around the perimeter and us all in the middle, having a grand old time.
So if you have anything that you want to display--doesn't have to be trains or
space,--ANYTHING LEGO would be fantastic--and you can attend for the weekend,
let me know.
The web page for the show is here--
<https://www.torontotrainshow.com/>
Details--
SHOW LOCATION
Brampton Fairgrounds
12942 Heart Lake Road, Brampton ON
SHOW HOURS
SAT - OCTOBER 5, 2019
10:00AM To 4:00PM
SUN - OCTOBER 6, 2019
10:00 AM To 4:00 PM
50,000 Square Feet Of Model Trains Including A New Third Building!
Operating Layouts
New & Used Items For Sale
Play Area For The Kids
Free Parking & Fully Accessible Building
ATM & Food On Site
The good bit is that if we're exhibitors, we get 'food credit vouchers' for the
on-site food vendors. I don't know what they are, so there may be a Wendy's run
in there at some point, but hey, free lunch for 2 days.
I'll need to know soon--like at or before the lego dinner in May. I'd like some
confirmation so I know what I have to arrange. If 3-4 people at minimum sign
up, I'll just ask for a 10x10 area--that'll suffice. However, if we get the
attendance that we used to get 'back in the day', I'll ask for a 10x20 foot
area.
We've done it in the past and always had a great time. Forward to all your
friends (those that don't check LUGNET) and let me know
Thanks

Wow--2 shows scheduled!
So we have the '80's Toy Expo on April 7th, 2019
<https://www.ontariocollectorscon.com/80s-toy-expo-2019-is-april-7th-in-mississauga-ontario/>
(which I asked for more tables for others to display their stuff :) )
and now we are scheduled to appear at the Ancaster Collectorfest on May 5, 2019
<http://www.collectorshows.ca/Shows/TOY_2019-05-05.php>
I'm looking forward to both, and I love the idea of just doing shows :) (1)
If you have the time, stop on by--these shows have pretty inexpensive admission
fees, and I'll be there talking myself hoarse with the public...
Dave K
1 - So if you have a show at which the OBB CSL would be appropriate, please drop
me a line--I'm looking to do more shows!

I've now signed up the OBB CSL for the '80's Toy Expo on April 7th, 2019
<https://www.ontariocollectorscon.com/80s-toy-expo-2019-is-april-7th-in-mississauga-ontario/>
It's at the same hotel convention room as the last show--
6750 Mississauga Road, Mississauga, Ontario
I've also requested an additional 'display table' so others can display their
stuff. I've had a few people voice interest in bringing something for display.
I don't know how well this'll go over, but I'm going to try it and see what
happens :)
I'm also hoping that I'll have at least a bit of time to take some good pictures
and video of the layout this time--I didn't have any time last show for this.
Hope to see you there!

Hello Space People!
After the new Benny Spaceship came out for LM2, I thought I could build a 918
using the BUWP (Big Ugly Wing Piece)
So I tried. At first, I just added 3 x 6 wing plates to the front and back, and
added other wing plates on top to get the required depth for the minifig inside
the cabin.
Last week it hit me--many spaccers are doing the 'DWD' (double wing deck) thing,
so I tried to build another modified 918 using the BUWP and DWD
<https://flic.kr/s/aHsmAD2LeE>
I've included all my interations of the 918 through the years (okay, one from a
decade ago and 2 from this year)
As we got a Cricut cutter for Christmas, I've created stencils for the registry
#, and, following my favourite sci-fi series of all time, labelled my subsequent
builds from the original 918 as A, B and C. The font I used--I asked elsewhere
and the response was Microgramma--that works well.
Having fun with the BUWP--i'm going to get a few more sets and try some other
ideas.

I posted my MK II Viper a few years
back. I finally got around to doing the MK VII version in LDD and rendered in
Bluerender.
It is built in the ~1 stud = 1 foot scale I have built my other models to. It
is slightly longer than scale, but that is to compensate for the extra width
that our overly obese minifigs require.
brickshelf gallery
when moderated
In my research, I realized that there are two subtly different versions out
there. The original has the wings blending into the fuselage all the way out
toward the nose and has different shaped wings. The MK VIIB has the wings
blending into the fuselage about the midpoint of the nose (and remind me a lot
of how the wings on an F-18 blend into the forward fuselage). I chose to try to
model the B model and used this
site put up by one
of the VFX modelers for the show as a reference.
This was a difficult build to try to make all the angles come together and look
right at this scale. The core is a 2x2 structure using the many bricks with
studs on their sides that are now available. The model literally has studs up
in all 6 directions to achieve the form.
I did look at this excellent
MOC of the MKVIIA by
atomictoaster85 somewhat in the build process as it appeared much smaller and
true to scale than other MK VII MOCs I have seen online. Given the shape of
the rear fuselage behind the cockpit, there are only so many ways to achieve the
stepped look with LEGO bricks at this size.and that portion of my model does
look very similar. I dont know if I am satisfied with the large sloped wedges
on the sides of the rear of the fuselage relative to the MK VII reference I was
using and may continue to twiddle with it in the future.
A minifig does barely fit into the cockpit, but as a result, the controls and
instrumentation are not as detailed as I would normally like. Yet another
compromise when trying to build at a smaller scale.
I have been challenging myself to include fully retractable landing gear in
these Viper models that closes cleanly. On the nose gear, I didnt quite
achieve the effect I wanted. I had another nose gear design planned (similar to
my LL919 model) but the nose structure became too compromised when I started
deleting bricks to make room for the nose gear assembly. So I ended up using a
simple hinge piece with a 1x2 brick. It works, but does interrupt the clean
lines of the bottom of the craft.
Lastly, Im not sure I like the minifig surfboards for the wing/tail tips. I
thought they would look cool, but are too wide for the scale Im working at. I
would also like to eliminate the gaps on the wing/tail cannons. Again, these
are some things I might continue to experiment with. But overall, I believe the
design is 90% there, and I am happy with it for now.
Thanks for looking,
