Y’know, I started the process of actually registering at Eurobricks to post stuff like this but then it hit me--what the h-e-whatevers--why am I not posting on LUGNET?? Am I contributing to the delinquency of this absolutely fantasically historical cyber-LEGO area???? (and I cried a little when that hit me...)

So with much further ado and fanfare, my new LEGO room--

And the layout fo the room--

All pics here--

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sparky1701/sets/72157631775266975/

I know people still read LUGNET--I see the stats per thread. Just not many actually post. I also see the other NG’s having lots of threads and posts and such (like eurobricks and others)... and I find it to be just a wee bit sad (for multitude of reasons) but I (again) will make an honest effort to post LEGO stuff here. I’m doing stuff (time permitting) and I haven’t ‘advertised’ as much as I used to (also sad).

I miss you guys.

Anyway, there you are.

Very nice. I didn’t see any pics that showed the ceiling, so I must ask, what kind of lighting do you have?

I recently organized my LEGO building room. My parts bins are quite different than yours, but their placement along the perimeter of the wall is very similar. The problem I have with my lighting is that I have a single dome light fixture in the center of the ceiling. Anywhere I stand in the room to get parts out of a bin, I create a shadow on what I’m looking at. (The building table is in the middle of the room, so I have good lighting when actually building something.)

I plan on having 2 sets of fluorescent lights (each set/fixture uses two 4’ 32 watt lights) installed soon; one near each end of the ceiling. Hopefully this will give me the kind of light I want.

The original basement room used recessed lighting. I separated the 4 POTS that are now in the LEGO room from the rest of the basement and threw a separate switch on them. At the same time I was able to add plugs along the new wall.

I found a 4’ flourescent housing at a garage sale last summer for 50 cents and mounted it right above my work area, which adds additional lighting to where I do most of my work.

There are shadows at points when I’m retrieving stuff from the bins, but thus far that hasn’t really impacted finding things--usually I bring the entire bin to the work area where it’s well lit.

Going forward I may add lighting to the room but for now, is ok.

I do appreciate flourescent tubes, but I might have to get a more ‘natural’ lighting method because the greys/bleys blend together in flourescent lighting (at least for me anyway)

Thanks for checking!

I really like the layout of the Lego room. Very well organized.

One comment on flourescent lighting... I had some Lego sets on display at work many years ago. I decided to take them home when I noticed that the flourescent lighting in the office had turned the outside of the white bricks a faint yellow color. I was not a happy camper.

My 6990 monorail was set up for may years in the basement under florescent lights. Yeah, some of the white is pretty much tan in colour now. It’s very odd, though--some white pieces didn’t turn colour at all, whilst some went completely tan in colour. The 2x8 plates with the tiles on top have tan/white combos where the tiles blocked the light--I can pretty much build the 6990 today using the original white pieces because it’s so blatantly obvious which ones are the original white pieces.

Also, the sun’ll do it to the whites as well--leave your MOC in front of a window for a few months and see...

I have as yet to try Retr0brite but it’s been a plan for a while. Sooner or later I’ll do it and let you know if it reverses the UV damage.

Hi Dave,

thanks for posting your LEGO-room here at Lugnet! I like that as a very compact storage and building room. What happens with models? All in diplay around your house? Another storage area for sets and MOCs?

****

On topic of de-coloring: UV-damages are done and can not be reversed, I guess. But some of the tanning is in fact not a UV-cause. And I never heard that “fluorescent tubes” cause stronger damage than other lights. Halogen lamps send out harsh UV. That might be an issue.

On the other hand there is a common trick to whiten tanned (white) bricks: put them (especially behind window panes) into the sunlight for a while. They actually become pretty white again. If you disbelieve: try with a cheap collection of old 1x2 bricks.... It actually works! Much better, safer and milder than hydrogen peroxide containing detergents.

BTW: some chemical experts at 1000steine have claimed, that some volatile contents of wood and brown cardboard lead to decolouring. So storing your bricks in transparent plastic boxes (but in quite dark areas) is the best way to go. So you did well on that.

Best Regards,

Ben

If my MOCs aren’t on top of the shelving, then they’re in boxes for the next show. No display room, and I realized a long time ago that they just get dusty and broken on display (especially now with a 3 yr old around)

It’s not really a concern at this point--I have enuf, and sometimes I like the off colour (i.e. Mike Shiel’s hockey arena), but I did want to try it. I’ll try your idea above first, though.

Hi Ben, Thanks for posting your Lego Room pics here, I saw the images of your under table storage carts, and i love the idea of them.

I am also using Ikea’s Ivar Shelving for my Lego room, but I saw this image, and I have never seen a Double wide shelf that looks like your building surface.. is it a custome built shelf? http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=4796384

Unfortunatly, most of my basic brick bins are empty (at least the 2 x 4 bins as the bricks are all being used as filler under our many displays..

Hi Jeff, that are in fact two simple shelf boards connected by two hinges similar to this:

http://www.franz-holz.de/images/holz/flightcase-scharnier.jpg

So that gives a hinge connection which permits to fold the front part of the table down. (There are angle-brackets below, that keep the table in straight position normally, but the brackets can be swung out of position themselves).

One of the thoughts was, ‘Hey, if Lar++ (1) ever visits our humble abode for a cuppa LEGO, I’d better be able to easily find what he requested or I’d look the fool!’

No, seriously, it was. With that, and probably more mainly, I’m trying to reduce the amount of time it takes me to find a specific part to add to actual building time. Of course, 3.5 yr olds have a different method--big piles on the floor. So sorting day is always like 3 steps forward, 2 steps back. Lately (past 3 weeks) he is actually helping sort a bit--since I sort by colour first, he’s getting very good at that. However, as soon as he finds a minifig, or a boat hull, or a motorcycle, or, well, almost anything related to transporation, well, there goes the help :)

And the pic is a little outdated already--I’m down to 2 and a half totes of unsorted stuff now--that makes me so much happier.

With that, I do have one tote completely full of tires (‘tyres’ for those across the pond) and wheels.

As well, almost the entire top shelf is baseplates and toolboxes now.

And you will note I still ahve a tote full of instructions that were suppose to make their way to a friend in the US of A... Some day... :) Letting ya know, they’re still here!

I also have a tote overflowing with just bionicle bits--and it’s just bionicle bits--all bushings/axles/friction/frictionless pegs and anything else that can be used to build a Dave’bot to whup Chris’s heinie in any robot competiton have been removed and sorted into my technic collection. So it’s just like arms, chests, masks, brains, feet, weapons, etc... and it’s full (5)

Dave K

1. substitute Larry for, well, anyone who may visit just to see the LEGO collection.. (2)

2. btw, that is a standing invite for everyone--when in The Mighty Hammer!!, look us up and come over for a meet ‘n greet--we have an open door policy (3)

3. a proviso--it is a townhouse, so, say, your LUG of 50 members might have a wee bit of ‘shoe horning’ if y’all visit at the same time...(4)

4. though, to be said, we did have that many ppl in our abode for my mom’s wake, so we can do it

5. and looking for a good home for anyone that has some spare cash--seriously again--I will never use it. I was mildly interested in bionicle and I love the absolutely fantastic builds that I see ppl make using these parts ‘n pieces, but I’m not that builder, nor do I plan to be. There’s no need for me to have an overflowing bin of bionicle pieces...

Mostly I’m just in awe of how it’s such a totally over the top use of Visio. :) (which I have used in the past for trying to decide what buildings go where)

I should try to find my old EverQuest Ranger Epic Quest visio I made years ago--that one was over the top... But I’d have to search thru many pics..

nm--found it and uploaded to my flickr stream for ‘historical reference’--

Awesome room tour... and I wish more ppl would do that... I love seeing other peoples collections.

A good portion of mine is organised very similar to yours.

Thanks for sharing,

Cheers, Janey “Red Brick”

Come to think of it, I’ve never really seen your collection...

We need to do house visits--do a roving tour of AFOL homes in our LUG!

Hear Hear!!

Although I think janes place is a little crowded for a visit.. Chris Male and I were chatting the other day about having Sorting parties.

And by Janes place I of course meant Janey’s place... Jane will never let us visit her place.
