Thanks to the post a couple of days ago, I too picked up the current passenger
train for under $95.

While perusing the kbkids.com site, I found that the 6441 Deep Reef Refuge
(Originally $59.99!!!) was marked down to $19.99.  Use one of the 10% off
coupons from flamingoworld.com and make it $18 plus shipping, BUT, if you buy
two or more you get free shipping (all orders over $30).

Wow!

Thanks for posting this.  I ordered 5 of each, for just $161.60.  I
guess I could have ordered more of the 6441's, but I mainly want to
part those out except for a couple of pieces, and I'm not sure how
"popular" those pieces I don't want will be.

I used the other promo--the $5 off one--and managed to score those two for $30.91.
Not a bad deal at all; now I can build my all-greys/blacks Explorien Starship, and
rebuild my transplanetary torpedo bombers.  But I wonder what I'm going to do with
all those dang sharks...?

Do what Spielburg (supposedly) did, plant them mysteriously on the
mother-ship (from Close Encounters). Rumor had it that somewhere buried
among all the crap on the mother-ship was R2D2 and the shark from Jaws.
I even think I caught a glimpse of R2D2 one time :)

I don't know about any sharks on it, but the mother ship model not only has an
R2D2 on it (painted flat dark dark gray), but it has a VW Van and a ton of
random airplane and car parts from a whole bunch of different models.  Up
close it is very cool to look at everything painted in a very low contrast
color and try to figure out what the various elements were originally designed
to model.

Spielberg donated the main mother-ship model to the Smithsonian National Air
and Space Museum a couple of years ago.  NASM now displays it, but not in the
main building on the mall, it houses the model at the Paul E. Garber facility
out in Greenbelt, MD. (Sort of the overflow/warehouse/restoration facility for
NASM, at least until the Dulles Airport facility is ready.)

(For one last little bit of worthless trivia on the topic, the model has a ton
of wires hanging out of it that lead to all of the various lights in the
model, but when the disconnected from the controller, all of the wires were
wholesale chopped, so it may never work as designed again....  Tours of the
Garber facility are available by appointment most weekends of the year, and
one or two days each summer they hold an open house.)

The coupon I found stated it could only be used once per order so I
ended up paying $35.00 for two.  That is still a great deal though.

It looks to me like it only comes with one shark, but does have a
dolphin (cool), sawfish and 2 mantas.

But it's a *white* shark!  Doesn't that make a big difference?  And don't forget
the octopus.  I'm sure that everyone needs yet another octopus.

Now, now, now...in my love of Ogre and G.E.V., I acquiesced on an
AucZILLA lot for Steve, but somehow free chondricthyes (cartiliginous
fishes, which includes all but Mr. Octopus) seems a bit too generous.
Maybe a nominal fee...?  ;)  (And is he still doing that Pirate game?
It sounded like a heck of a lot of fun.)

... (And is he still doing that Pirate game?
It sounded like a heck of a lot of fun.)

Yup.  He is.  :-)

This past March, in Biloxi, MS, I attended Coast Con,
where Steve was one of the guests.

I, in costume, assisted Steve in running his Pirate Game.

(As a member of the SCA, as well as being a regular attendee
of several sci-fi cons, I've got a supply of costume shirts
and props, etc.  Also, as Biloxi is now "home" to several casinos,
one of which is called "Tresure Island", and has a gift shop
with -- you guessed it -- kiddie "pirate" props, one of the players
brought some "props" -- an eyepatch, pirate captain's hat, and "hook" --
she got some extra pirate people as a reward for being "in costume".)

In fact, I had set up a truly diabolical "trap"
for unwary players -- when setting up the game,
I had dumped _ALL_ of the snakes one just one island.
To be "fair", I also put some of the juicier treasures
on "Snake Island" (the "magic scroll" was in the treasure chest,
and one of the super-valuable silver bricks was on the island
also, IIRC).

With such tantalizing "bait", Snake Island proved to be irresistable
to one of the players.  He landed virtually his entire crew (20+ pirates,
I'm thinking), leaving behind just one or two pirates to man his ship.

Since the snakes weren't covered in the rules, yet,
we had to "wing it": "people" attack first; if armed with cutlass
or pistol (you can't aim a rifle at something as small as a snake,
was Steve's reasoning), have a 50-50 chance of killing one snake per turn;
snakes moved as fast as people, attacked _after_ people,
but had a 50-50 chance of killing one person per turn (super nasty venom).

Unfortunately, the poor schmuck ^H^H^H^H^H^H player
forgot to _count_ the number of snakes on Snake Island.

In the first turn after landing, he killed about a dozen snakes.
Then, in the latter half, about half of the remaining snakes
swarmed his pirates, and killed _half_ of them (in just that one turn).

He didn't quite realize his error, yet.

Next turn, he stuck it out and tried to kill the rest of the snakes
(he killed about seven or eight, I think), leaving two or three . . .
_DOZEN_ . . . snakes behind. . . .

About this time, other players noticed what was happening,
and the consensus was, "What the [%@%^] are you _DOING_?!?"
About midway through this second turn, once I started rolling
for the snakes' attacks, I started suffering from
an uncontrollable fit of maniacal laughter, punctuated by the refrain
"Beware Snake Island!"

(Why, yes, I am a Game Master for a local group of PRGers...
How could you guess? :-P  :-)

This episode of disturbing behaviour prompted Steve
into showing the unfortunate player some mercy --
by GM fiat, his ship and surviving crew were assumed
to have made it back to the home port safe and sound.

I've been trying to get the Staff of Coast Con into inviting Steve back
for next year's con, and to ask him to run the game again.

("Beware Snake Island! BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahaha!" >:-)

That sounds wonderful--is SJ still just "fiddling around" or is he finally
entertaining the idea of making this thing into a set of standard rules?  I
really wanted to have a chance at it someday.  That's what I get for being in
the Northeast.  *sigh*

reading the story, and when you got to the refrain I half wanted to sing
along.  My life is poorer for not having been in Biloxi. (I never EVER thought
I would have said that.  Ever.  EVER.)

Isn't Guam covered with snakes, too?  I think we have a precedent for
snake-coated islands, although at least yours had something more valuable than
guano on it.

About midway through this second turn, once I started rolling

Arrr.  Arrr.  ARRR!  I think I've just regressed 15 years.  That's marvelous.

Well, much of the rules are posted on his web page. All we're really
waiting for is the charts and tables. I don't expect that it will get
beyond the shareware state, though if it becomes popular enough, I could
see Steve figuring out a way to more formally publish it.

Got mine yesterday.  Hurt, too.  First truly HUGE shipment I've
received in my new office.  I used to work in a building where my
wife could just pull up in front of my door if we got a huge
package, making it easy to bring it out to the car.

Now I have to walk quite a ways to my car.  Kinda stunk carrying
that huge box full of sets.  :)
