The Greater Portland LEGO® Railroaders (GPLR) are not exclusively about LEGO trains...

On Thursday, January 11, 2007 GPLR delivered their 4th LEGO diorama installment at the Washington Square LEGO Store (Tigard, Oregon) “Window Into The Community” display.

The diorama is a Rocket Garden and celebrates LEGO Space Exploration, or as some of us call it “Space Bricksploration”. This is a Minifig/Town related theme LEGO has periodically marketed since 1990, with the advent of set 1682 Space Shuttle.

Jeremy Rear and Kim Toll take the theme to a highly designed and engineered level to build MOCs (My Own Creatons) with unique and unconventional details.

Please take a moment to preview our creations. If you get a chance, stop by the Washington Square LEGO Store and carefully look at the details.

In addition, these MOCs and thousands of others will also be featured at BrickFest™ PDX 2007, March 30 - April 1, 2007. Be sure to register and join the fun with the international LEGO community!

As the Art Coordinator for Northwest BrickCon 2006 (NWBrickCon2006 NWBC2006) one of my responsibilities was to produce the trophies for the art category.

One trophy was given out for “Best 2D Art”. One trophy was given out for “Best 3D Art”.

I have posted plans (both as pdf and ldr) and renderings of these sculptures at http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/happyfrosh/nwbrickcon2006/ArtTrophies2006/.

Comments welcome and appreciated.

At NWBrickCon2006 I showed my first ever multi-colored sculpture.

It was a part of the moonbase display. It was an 8 foot tall cone with a bulging red stripe spiraling up the side.

But the red stripe is structural. It’s not just tacked on the outside. It may look boring to other people (after all it’s not naked people), but it’s one of my most important technical breakthroughs.

Comments welcome and appreciated.

This year, The Puget Sound Lego Train Club (PSLTC) was asked to be the main model railroad layout for the fair. The layout was a great success and thanks goes out to all of the members and all of the people who helped out with staffing.

Every year the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup invites a train club to
display at the Fair.  This year that club is the Puget Sound LEGO Train
Club (the first L-guage club so featured since the PNLTC displayed in
1999).

The PSLTC has a 32'x15' layout in the Hobby Hall featuring Jeff
Pelletier's downtown, Thomas Rafert's new (and old) mills, Brian Kelley's
offshore oil platform, and much more.  The display is available for
viewing during regular Fair hours, 10am--10pm Sunday through Thursday and
10am--11pm Friday and Saturday, for the duration of the Fair (September
8--24).

Some pictures are available here:

NWBrickCon 2006 is looking for people who want to present a talk, moderate
a roundtable, or run a special activity at the Con this year.

We already have some traditional activities---like a Dirty Brickster,
Wacky Races, and Draft---lined up, but there are still several spaces
open.  In the past, we have had slideshows, presentations on building
techniques and styles, discussions of how to package MOCs for shipping,
and more.

The Con runs October 6, 7, and 8 (move-in October 5).  Talks and
activities will most likely be scheduled Friday afternoon and evening,
Saturday and Sunday morning, and Saturday evening, with roundtables during
public hours (11-4 Saturday and Sunday).

If you are interested in presenting, please e-mail me (my first three
initials @morfydd.net) with the title of your talk/roundtable/activity, a
brief description (for the Event Program), and any time restrictions (if
you won't be getting in until later Friday, for instance).

Deadline is Sunday, September 10.

Presenters (and everyone else) can register for the Con at
http://www.nwbrickcon.org

Hope to see you at the Seattle Center!

This is the Spaceport I built for the 2005 NW Brickcon.

Some features:

working baggage system (elevator takes it down to the tarmac, and a conveyor takes it up to the baggage claim are)

monorail connection

it was made to connect with my gray civilian transport (see bricklink folder at bottom for those old pictures)

Thank goodness for PAB in Bellevue.

8 gates, each at typical moonbase corridor height.

3 moonbase corridor connections (2 at 10 bricks high, one at 30 high)

OK - this isn’t really a vignette, but it DOES feature Joe Vig.

This was a module made for the Haunted Mansion at the 2005 NW BrickCon.

It is pretty self-explanatory; Joe-Vig, as a symbol of all that is naive about the mini-fig world is being roasted (literally) by the non-Mini-figs.

David,

I’ve been meaning to enter this year after year and never seem to get around to it. It’s not looking any better this year. I’ve got a Castle display I’m putting on this weekend with Dan Parker and then NWBrickCon just around the corner. Ack! NWBC is only 6 weeks away.

Have you checked with them about having a special display for your angel?

Thomas

There were some pretty cool entries that I saw. An amazing Jack-in-the-box, and a really cool castle. Both amazingly detailed for the size constraints of the contest. The person accepting entries told me that I wasn’t able to take pictures. :-(

I dropped off my entry, a couple of linked rings, measuring 14.5” tall at the center.

Plans and rendering for my entry:

Oops - should have made myself clearer:

The Puyallup Fair will be showing the entries during the fair September 9-25, 2005. Winners will be announced September 9, 2005. Photos will be allowed during the fair.

I posted photos of some of the entries to the Puyallup Fair Lego competition at: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/happyfrosh/Puyallup2005/

The grand champion in the youth category was a cow driving a pickup truck with a pumpkin in the back: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1409652

The grand champion in the adult category was a building (I think a church): http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1409566

Yes, once again it is time for the Dirty Brickster at NWBrickCon.  Yes, it is
once again time to peruse your various Lego and Lego related stuff to find that
perfect gift to exchange, that thing you don't really need but that someone else
may go ga-ga over, or possibly agree that it sucks, or maybe if they are lucky
will at least be able to trade it for something good at Wal-Mart.

So bring your gift, valued in the $10 to $20 range to NWBrickCon for the Dirty
Brickster.  Make sure it is wrapped.  We will draw numbers and you can choose a
mystery item or be a Dirty Brickster and steal someone else's treasure!  Only 3
steels allowed per item (with the possible exception of the first person - we
will vote on that before the event).

This is always great.  And I promise this year I'll be bringing something a lot
better than Mushroom Bins (although of course, these excellent sorting and
storing bins will once again be available for you to test and purchase!)

It isn't too late to register for the best Brick show in the Northwest.
Register now at www.nwbrickcon.org, and we will see you October 7th-9th!

-Matt :)

NWBrickCon 2005 would like *you* to present, facilitate, or run a talk,
round-table, class, or special activity.

NWBrickCon schedules several classes and special events throughout the
Con---seeing and sharing MOCs is fun, but a Lego fan convention offers
special opportunities for us to learn from each other and to share unique
activities.

Currently we have many special activities scheduled, including a draft, a
master build, a speed build, Wacky Races, and talks on Micro building,
landscaping, and packing Lego.

Past activities and talks not yet taken for this year included theme
roundtables, DCC and Lego Trains, the LDraw system of tools, and more.

Sessions typically run twenty to fifty minutes in length.  A/V
presentation equipment (projector, PowerPoint, etc.) will be
available---please let us know about your needs in this area.

If you would be interested in running/giving/facilitating a
seminar/session/activity please e-mail
present (at) nwbrickcon.org
Please mail your proposal as soon as possible, but no later than September
16th (we need to firm up our schedule by then to ensure inclusion in the
Event Program).  Scheduling will generally be on a first-come,
first-filled basis.

Presenters can present to AFOL Con attendees.  Also, the Con incorporates
a public exposition (12--4 Sat & Sun) and we welcome talks or activities
directed toward the non-AFOL public.

Presenters must, of course, be Con attendees.  Preregistration closes next
Wednesday, so register now if you haven't already.  Information on
registration and the Con is general is available at
http://www.nwbrickcon.org/
