I went  to the show (with no LEGO in tow at all :( )

But I took lots of video (some of which can never be shown in polite company...
ever!)

Anyways, here's my edited video of the various creations that people brought--

http://youtu.be/U0C6ZsYxFV0

As always, Janey and the event organizers put on an awesome show!  I have a good
idea of the amount of effort that is needed to put a show such as this together
and make it utterly fantastic, and the efforts were appreciated, not just by me
and my family, but by the public that I spoke with at the show.  I heard nothing
but high praise from everyone!

Again, thanks BrickFete for these wonderful shows!

And ignorant ppl who might admin other lego forum sites really should stop
saying that...

As well, before I get to my post, (and to continue with my rant), if you can't
respect the fact that, without LUGNET, your little forum website probably
wouldn't be as big as it is, or even in existence at all.

As far as I can see, LUGNET laid the groundwork for all subsequently successful
AFOL forums.  LUGNET separated the AFOL's from the 'background noise' that was
rtl and other newsgroups.  It was one of the first message boards--programmed
form scratch, and well before cookie-cutter PHP message boards--that allowed us
to communicate with one another whilst keeping out the spammers.

Again, you don't have to respect any of this.  You don't have to take any of
this into consideration when running your discussion group.  However, don't
think for a second that you have the temerity to pronounce LUGNET dead.

And another little point to all your admins and owners of other AFOL sites--not
one of you combined ALL facets of the hobby in the same fashion and to the same
extent that LUGNET did.  And none of you could do it now.  You want to stay
ensconced into your own little niche of the hobby--all the power to you--have
fun with that.  Just don't go slamming the giant that lead the way for you.

All that said, I visit many of the AFOL sites on a regular basis because LUGNET
isn't what it once was.  There is no 'one-stop shopping' for the AFOL community
now.  So again I say, have your sites!  I love visiting them and seeing what
other AFOL's are saying and building...  there is no end of discovery out there.
Again, however, you're there now because of who came before you.  You're
standing on the shoulders of giants who lead the way.

Anyway, now that I got that out of the way, I'm building something!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/sparky1701/sets/72157643617736845/

It's for the OBB space layout (obviously).  I needed something to replace the
big crater and this is what I came up with.  It needs a few more BrickLink
orders and lots of time.

Again, no interiors as yet.  I do keep stating that when I get the layout
finalized, that I'll go back and readdress all the buildings and stuff and add
the details.  however, as yet, that hasn't happened :(

Janey and the Toy Building Zone allowed me to set up the OBB Classic Space
Layout.  The good bit is that it gets to be set up for a few months instead of a
few days.

Since this layout sits in boxes when it's at home, it's a pleasure to see it set
up.

We're continually adding 'enhancements' to the layout, and it's great to have it
set up to make sure these enhancements fit in.

Anyway, have a look and let me know what you think!

Take care,

And it is big...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sparky1701/sets/72157635672708083/

I built it for Shiptember.

I really haven't built anything for a 'competition' since rtl stopped having
robot competitions many moons ago...

I had thought of building something at a larger scale that would complement my
space station, and the impetus to do so was the Shiptember build.

This build was ruminating in the back of my mind for years, and one of the
contributing inspirations was this--

http://www.flickr.com/photos/si-mocs/7694437706/

The only big difference between what I originally imagined and the final build
that you see, is that my first thought was a fully enclosed repair bay under the
landing pads holding the 928's.  Two things stopped that from happening--I
couldn't make the ship strong enough to 'swoosh' and couldn't quite figure out
how to make it work in such a confined space.

I think adding the interior shuttle bays, a la 'battlestar galactica' was a good
last-minute fill-in for that space.

Another original idea was to make these huge, complicated engines at the back.
Realizing that I can't build that way was depressing, and I did what I always
do--fill in with something that looks fine.

Anyway, thought I would post here 'cause LUGNET is a little bit of a ghost town
lately and I wanted to bring something to the table.

This ship is by no means done yet--I will probably do a complete rebuild--adding
the interior details that I mostly left out just to get it done for Shiptember.

As a tangent, I was shocked--Shocked, I say--when Jeff told us he was running
low on basic bricks--how could that possibly happen to people who have amassed
such large collections over the years.  However, I have used up most of the
following--

1 x 2 blue plates, 2 x 2 blue plates, 1 x 8 blue bricks, 2 x 22 blue inverted
slopes, and a slew of other items...

THe good bit is that I don't have to sort these now :)

If it stays together, it'll be at BrickFete 2014.

This is a call out to all AFOL, LEGO collectors, builders, hobbyists,
enthusiasts within walking, driving or flying distance of Toronto, Canada.

The Brickfête Team would love to see you this summer for our annual LEGO Fan
Convention. Join us for some good times completely focused on our beloved
obsession with the brick. You will see some amazing displays, have chances to
get involved with fun games and event, as well as hear from an official LEGO
Designer and LEGO Master Builder.

This July 11, 12, 13 and 14, 2013!
Hilton Hotel, Airport Rd in Toronto, Canada

To register for the four days visit our AFOL portion of our site…
www.brickfete.com/AFOL/event and please note, space is limited so act now,
operators are standing by.

We have secured some great room rates (however those end soon, so book now
before you end up paying full Toronto prices.)

If you are from out of town (or country) we are located right across from the
Toronto Airport, which means you can just fly here, board the shuttle to the
hotel and not worry about renting cars, maps or public transit.

Join our website’s free forum if you have any questions or want to discuss
things such as sharing a room, collaborative builds, or just a chance to connect
with others before the event.

Our list of events are being posted and there is something for everyone to get
involved with.

Have you built something cool that others would love to see???
Do you want to hang out with other amazing builders?
Listen to LEGO guest speakers or get involved with build challenges or contests!
Don't forget those prize raffles and all the other fun activities!
Want to have chances to win LEGO prizes or bid in the LEGO auction??
Display with us and enjoy the company of other AFOLS.
We can’t wait to see you on the attendees list and to see what you have built.

If you are new to conventions and are hesitating… check this forum post out and
feel free to ask questions www.brickfete.com/AFOL/thread/120

All the rest of the details and more can be read on www.brickfete.com

See you in July,

Thanks all for the info.

And at 6 foot 4, coach surfing can be dangerous for my other half :).

I don't know if there is anyone still around LUGNET in Toronto, but I was hoping
for some local info.  I've never been to Toronto (other than an hour changing
planes at the airport once), so don't know the area at all.  My other half (buys
me LEGO and helps out at shows, but no interest in building himself) is heading
up to Toronto to catch some Jays games, and will be in Toronto April 15-21.  He
won't have a car, and will be using public transit mostly.  The first two nights
he is coach surfing near Eglington and Keele.  Looking at a map, it doesn't look
that far from the new LEGO store in Yorkdale Shopping Centre.  Is the new store
open yet?  Is it possible to walk or take transit easily to get there?

I've never personally been in a LEGO store, and as I don't think they will ever
open one in the Maritimes, I don't think I ever will, so it is still a big deal
for me.

Thanks in advance for any info.
