LEGO has had message boards for the Mindstorms site for a while now. I am
not sure how long these have been around but judging from the number of
messages, not long. My guess is that the younger folks would probably use
these boards more and that the adult fans would probably continue to use
LUGNET. However, you have to wonder if LEGO is trying to capture the LUGNET
community as well.

I hope not. But I do agree that the younger fans will take to it.
Well, I see one member of our community has already posted there (see the
message about the Santa Fe Super Chief Cars in the trains group). But
there's something interesting, it's been "modified" by the "list moderator".
I wonder how much of Tim's original message has been changed.
I don't fancy posting where somebody has the access to re-word what I say.
I'd like it to be an all or nothing kind of moderation.

I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. When I read my message (after
it had been approved and publicly visible) this morning, I was too groggy to
notice a difference. I notice they trimmed an off-topic comment on the top
(something to the effect of 'just testing the new boards out'), and trimmed
where I signed my name at the bottom.
I'm not comfortable with this happening either. I think all-or-nothing
moderation is far better - perhaps rejected messages could be held in a
folder for each member, with Administrator comments on what is wrong with
them, and a chance for the user to fix them themselves.
From a pending message about the Next Legend I have, I would expect my
comment, "The Monorail would make the perfect Futuron Legend, even though I
know its re-release is an impossibility. :^(" to be trimmed, as well as my
name at the bottom. While great for the kids, I don't like being censored.
I'm doing a fair amount of self-censoring on the opinions I give to those
boards in the first place. I don't see the problem with a signature line of
your name - I'm leaving out a LOT of things I could put in a signature
(email, website URLs, company name, etc etc).

However this does jive with their kid friendly theme. My 7 year-old
daughter just created her own LEGO Web account and I have to say that I feel
much safer allowing her to browse through the LEGO site knowing that someone
is moderating the boards and making it "kid friendly."

I can agree with that for a kid's forum. Definitely.
I'm assured LUGNET isn't being replaced (and I'm sure that wasn't LEGO's
intent either).

I posted a few comments... it will be interesting to see how or if they get
moderated. (as of a few min ago none had been yet). I agree with Tim, I had
already done some self editing on what I said. The comments are positive but
not uniformly so.
(my ID there is obvious... I was lucky as one of the very first people to
sign up, I got to pick the ID I really wanted)

My ID is pretty obvious too (MikeWalsh). How often are they approving
messages? I made a post this morning when I first saw this thread and it
still isn't approved (about five hours ago).

Maybe it's not really quite up and running?
If you go to the front page, www.lego.com, there is (at least for me) a
"message boards" link in the lower left corner which leads to
http://www.lego.com/messageboards/ ... this, for me anyway, is a dead link...
Does it work for other people? I have to go in with the link that was posted
at the top of the thread:

They moderated my messages in about 30 minutes, however, I posted one with
links to brickshelf's scans for the 'what Legend do you want to see' thread,
it hasn't been approved.

I have every reason to believe that's not their intention at all. Every
Question and Answer session with Brad, and every discussion I've had with
LEGO Direct employees, tells me their primary focus is the kids, which make
up the overwhelming majority of their market. Note the moderation system
already in place - they are trying to form a safe environment for the kids
posting there. Also, the topics focus on their products rather than on
"community" topics. They are polling kids for feedback on LEGO's product line.
I do not believe they will venture out very far beyond their core business -
selling toys. We won't see them try to launch an AFOL community replacement
site, because it won't be profitable for them. I wouldn't worry about LEGO
trying to replace LUGNET or other fan-run sites. I do think their boards are
a good idea, and I'm glad to see them finally in place.
