it turns out, I think that if TLC did almost everything that AFOLs wanted,
business would be better.  That's my take on it in a "nutshell" edition for

How about "... did almost anything ... " ?

Now, to be fair, I do think that TLC *are* doing some things that are of great
advantage to AFOLs.

First, there's the Bulk Brick offerings.  Yes, I know, many of these same
bricks were available in slightly different assortments ("Blue Bricks", "Red
Plates", etc) before.  Personally, I find their current grouping (a number of
exactly the same brick) infinitely more palatable.  Also, they *are* trying to
give AFOLs the bricks we want- note the whole "train windows"
debacle/correction.

Second, I think that the offerings like the Statue of Liberty and the Dragon
statue are definite overtures to AFOLs.  Kids are not going to want those • sets.

I also imagine that the eventual "design-your-set-online" will have higher
functions that AFOLs and older modellers will get more out of than kids.  That
remains to be seen, of course.

You are absolutely correct.  I would be interested in knowing how successful
those offerings are.  As good as those things are, and they do make it much
easier for use to build impressive train show displays, they don't affect
their core products and the core problem.  Bulk bricks and big models are
selfish suggestions AFOL's made.  There have been many, many unselfish
suggestions (i.e. kill juniorization) that would clearly benefit all
LEGO customers.

Suzanne alluded in another post to the need for LEGO to stay on the cutting
edge in the toy industry.  That may be true.  I actually like the current
themes alot (especially life on Mars and Action Team).  It's the set designs
that need some work.  They could stay on the cutting edge with themes
and implement more sensible design values to maximize the overall
market value of their offerings.

(...) I like what you have said here a lot, Kevin. The themes themselves are perfect, what sucks is the implementation. But as to staying "cutting edge," I think that goal may need some rethinking. With the exception of the linked Mindstorms, (...) (23 years ago, 4-Mar-01, to lugnet.general)
