Which is the best Lego castle set ever? I wonder if it is 6090 Royal Knight's
Castle.... But some mid 80s to early 90s sets are very good indeed (from what
I manage to appreciate in on-line catalogs). Too bad that was my Dark Age....

Regards!

I'm gonna go with 6086 Black Knight's Castle.  It just has it all.

I'd say the original Yellow Castle is the best.  The fact that it didn't use
wall pieces (not that I'm against them) means the pieces in that set are most
versatile.  However, I think it would've looked pretty good in gray instead...

I agree that 6090 was a good castle, probably the best castle in the last 8
years or so (since 6086 Black Knight's Castle).

I agree that the Yellow Castle is the best functionally (as far as use of
pieces and ability to make other creations)  But I feel it is not the best
visually.  I don't think yellow is particularly the best color for a castle.
Grey or black are better.

This is a ranking of my favorite castles:

1. 6080 King's Castle (one of my first two castles) - The most majestic
looking castle in my opinion.  Biggest castle (by base plate), and almost the
biggest piece wise (of the flat base castles).

2. 6085 Black Monarch's Castle - Very majestic looking, and very black.  Very
good!  One more piece than 6080, but smaller base.

3. 6074 Black Falcon's Fortress (the other of my first two castles) Best
feature is the black roofed peak.

4. 6073 Knight's Castle (never had it, and still don't, but have always wanted
it) I personally think that the red brick outline of the gate looks a little
strange, as well as the hinges that show on the front.

5. 6086 Black Knight's Castle - The best castle to use a raised baseplate.  I
prefer the standard plates to build on.  The raised ones are useful, but
rather restrictive (although good for making a Castle on a mountain)

6. 6090 Royal Knight's Castle - This brought me back to castle, after Dragon
Masters Pushed me away.  Unfortunately, Fright Knights pushed me away again.
I will stick with completing my older castle colletion unless they resurrect
the old 6080, 6085 style of castles.

7. 6081 King's Mountain Fortress - This is really not very a majestic looking
castle compared to it's flat base counterpart, 6080.  The smallest big castle
peice wise.

I left the Yellow Castle out of my list because I feel that it is in an
entirely different group, and I don't want to try to compare this classic
castle with the more standard lego castles.

Feel free to point out any good castles that I missed.

The trouble with getting in on Castles so late is that the only affordable
things that are available are definitely weaker.  The one thing I'll say for
the Night Lord's Castle is that it doesn't have a raised baseplate, and the
same for the Flying Ninja Fortress (yeah, I know, marginally Castles).  So,
after a quick look through the Fibblesnork area and before I look at your list,
the initial order I have for acquiring the big Castles is:

6080, 6085, 6074, 6090, 6086.

Now the fun part is reading your list (short read for you, long pause on my
part)...only one change.  I like the 6090 and 6086 for what they are, but I
tend to feel that raised baseplates are limiting.  The Yellow Castle simply has
two strikes against it from the word go.  Change the color....which begs the
question: if it is using old-fashioned bricks, how hard is it to duplicate in
gray, black, and/or white?

Let's see... DaveE's top 11: (pretty much all the large castles ever.. depends
what you call a castle, really...)

1. 6080 King's Castle (664 pcs)
  - great set, lots of pieces, very elegant, well constructed, openable...
2. 3075 Castle (779 pcs)
  - only bad part is the color. Great selection of pieces, big, openable, etc
3. 6086 Black Knight's Castle (569 pcs)
  - Very cool, lots of features, looks cool, etc. Only problem is the
    baseplate!
4. 6090 Royal Knight's Castle (743 pcs)
  - Very large, LOTS of features, bad: baseplate, lots of holes in the
    structure
5. 6085 Black Monarch's Castle (665 pcs)
  - A mimic of King's Castle, but for the worse, I felt. I never liked the
black with grey trim as much... plus there are some 'holes' in the
    construction
6. 6074 Black Falcon's Fortress (435 pcs)
  - very cool, very elegant, great design, etc. Only downside is size...
7. 6073 Knight's Castle (408 pcs)
  - A very good interpretation of a small fortress-- good color scheme, but
small, and the red gate was a little odd...
8. 6097 Night Lord's Castle (598 pcs)
  - Great piece selection, but hideous from the outside. Also had a good
interior... The other thing to like is its versatility. Very modular=cool
9. 6081 King's Mountain Fortress (429 pcs)
  - Design is ok, good semi-rare piece selection (black falcon, maiden, 3x3
diagonal bricks, arches, plate armor), bad baseplate, odd layout
10. 6091 King Leo's Castle (524 pcs)
  - Kinda neat design, really bad pieces, interesting interior, but not great,
    and an ugly baseplate
11. 6082 Fire Breathing Fortress (393 pcs)
  - Kinda dumb. Not much room for battlements, towers, etc... less of a castle
and more of a hidden forest fort. It had some neat features, but otherwise,
I wasn't overly impressed with it

Of course that's just kind of a general feeling... a bunch of 'em are really
tough to judge... The order could easily switch around a little... But that's
my general feeling

I have actally reproduced the castle to the best of my ability in grey (with
black highlights).  I took pictures of it that I will post soon so that all of
you can give me feed back.  I will also take a few pictures of the new
iteration of the castle.  I replaced a good portion of the castle walls with
newer grey castle wall pieces, which made the castle taller.  I also made the
front entrance and drawbridge taller.  I think it looks much better this way.
As a side note, I fortified it with Black Falcons (my favorite "kingdom").

I wasn't clear if you were restricting us to just castles or any set within the
Castle theme.  On the basis of just being a castle, my order would be as
follows:

6080, 6086, 375, 6085, 6074, 6090, 6073, 6081, 6097, 6091

In reality, I judge sets in three categories: look'n'feel, minifigs, pieces
(rare parts etc).  My favorite sets in those categories, across the whole
Castle theme, (off the top of my head) are as follows:

Look'n'Feel:
6067, 375, 6083, 6086, 6077, 6090, 6061, 6049, 6055, 6057

Minifigs:
375, 6086, 377, 6074, 6060, 6071, 6080, 6023, 6081, 6057

Pieces (including consideration for rare pieces):
6080, 6074, 6097, 6067, 6090, 6085, 6086, 6023, 6077, 6066

Just my two cents...

Hmm, having just recently built a bunch of castles, I've got some ideas. I
haven't yet built all the large castles, though I think I have all of them
except 375/6075, 6073, and 6085 (I have 6080, 6074, 6090, 6091/6098, 6081?
[perhaps, have instructions, don't have the CRAPP, but can substitute],
6086, 6097, 6093, 6079, and 6082).

So far I have built:

6080: 3 copies
--------------

I got these from a kid entering his dark ages. I had purchased one from him
that he had separated out, and was interested in another, but by them he had
given up on separating out the sets and sold the rest of the unsorted bricks
to me, so I had the joy of separating out the sets, and am still working on
it, I still have 3 copier paper boxes mostly full of bricks).

This is a nice castle. I like the built up gate and the draw bridge.

6074: 2 copies
--------------

I got these from the same kid, one separated, one in the unsorted box.
Unfortunately the 2nd copy is missing a few bits (fortunately the possibly
difficult bits are black 2x2x3 extreme slope corners, which I recently got
about 40 of off eBay).

This one is a little too small. I like the yellow half timbered wall, but it
looks out of place in this castle.

6090:
-----

Definitely the best of the recent castles. The first one since the 80s to
have a decent sized defending force. Also a much better CRAPP than the other
CRAPP based castles.

6091:
-----

I like this castle better than some of the others who have reviewed it. It's
a little sparse, but it actually has a decent layout, just needs more wall
height. Nice use of the CPAVP (Crummy Pit and Valley Plate) which was first
seen in 5986.

6087:
-----

As some have mentioned, at least it doesn't use a CRAPP. It does have some
good ideas, and is certainly the tallest castle. It's got too many doors
though.

6093:
-----

Well, how do you compare the Ninja castles to the European ones? I do like
the wall piece, it makes for substantial looking walls (and eliminates those
ground floor windows). The new door is nice, much beefier than the arched
castle doors. Again, a recent castle built without a CRAPP.

6079:
-----

While not as large as the other castles, it's still built on a 32x32
footprint. It's a fairly nice design, though the little archer's outpost
would have been better off if it had been rigged up in a tree (and a 3rd
tree would really help out the forest appearance).

I don't have a 6085 (though I've got instructions for it - came with one of
my 6086s...), and haven't built 6086 (I was going to, until I finally
figured out that the reason I couldn't find the instructions was because the
6086 that I had that I thought I had instructions for came with 6085
instructions!).

Looking through 6085's instructions, I definitely would not rate it as the
top castle. The two back towers are overhung outside the wall, which would
seem to me to be ripe for coming crashing down with the first catapult shot.
Then there's the back walkway which has floor to waist high holes.

Looking over 6086 and 6075 instructions on Brickshelf, I think I'd have to
rate 6080 as the best castle. 6075 comes very close though. It's interesting
to see the genesis of the castle wall piece in 6075. One good thing I note
about the castle wall piece, it's a brick taller than the yellow castle
walls.

I vote for 6083 knights castle.
