Here are a few pics of the castle I'm working on.  First is a rough layout that
I did up in Excel using square cells that represent a 4x4 Lego area:
http://home.columbus.rr.com/mcu/castle/layout.jpg

The purple rectangle in the center will be the king's quarters, or area where
all the royalty lives.  All the other colored rectangles will be other
buildings for merchants, peasants, soldiers, etc.  The bottom is the castle
front, all the gray is walls and dark gray will be towers of some sort (it is
very rough and likely to change as I build).

So far I have finished the outer wall for the front half of the castle, which
is made up of three sections that are 48x64 each.  They slide together using
the technic pin and socket technique, with bricks and plates snapped on to hold
things more firmly together.  The pics are here:

http://home.columbus.rr.com/mcu/castle/castle1.jpg
http://home.columbus.rr.com/mcu/castle/castle2.jpg
http://home.columbus.rr.com/mcu/castle/castle3.jpg
http://home.columbus.rr.com/mcu/castle/castle4.jpg

I have completed the foundation for the back half, which also has 3 sections.
Left rear is 48x80, the center rear section is 64x80 and right rear is 32x80.

I hope to have the outer wall for all six sections sometime before end of
February, then start on the king's quarters during the Spring.  Hopefully I can
get it completed by end of this summer, but my spare time for building seems to
be at a premium these days.  The "master" plan for this castle includes
surrounding terrain with moat flowing into a lake as well as a wooded region
along a small ridge of rocks.  Total area to be 288x288 or 9x9 square
baseplates (in a house I don't yet own)!

Geez ... the humbler has arrived;)  Michael Ulring is the master of large
castles and it looks like he has come to answer the call.

I guess most of us can see what it takes now (i.e. - stacks and stacks of 1x5x7
walls.)

I will put everything into making Capitol City later on, but I have a feeling
that Michael's upcoming castle will set a few precedents of it's own.

I wish we could all get together and put some of these mugs side by side ...
what a picture that would be.  Maybe over the summer?

Where do you live? You never know, there might be Lego fans living right next
door to each other and never even know it.
City life.
It's crazy.

(Sorry, I couldn't help myself - I just finished directing a One Act
called "Sure Thing" and this was a repeated line there (of course, the lego
fans part wasn't there)... I heard it 20 times every day for the last three
weeks, weekends excluded. I just *had* to say that ;-)

Pawel, I think you overstate things a bit.  I am proud of my creation, and
hopefully it turns out as well as it looks in my mind.  But there are a bunch
of people in this group who could probably put me to shame if given access to
the quantity of castle-related parts that I have accumulated over the years.
I've paid close attention to all pics that have been posted over the last few
months, including yours, and have taken many notes and ideas from everyone
elses creations.  Hopefully none of you mind if I borrow some of the ideas I
like best.

I guess most of us can see what it takes now (i.e. - stacks and stacks of

They do help, that is for sure. But I am not sure how I feel about a castle
wall with as many windows as I use wall pieces.  wish they would have made one
without the window cutout.

My main motivation to build a module-style castle was mobility. My last castle
was stuck in a basement on half of a ping-pong table, virtually immobile. All
the modules for my new castle will easily fit through a doorway. I agree with
you Pawel, it sure would be great to combine castle layouts/displays as well as
misc. inns, taverns, stables and terrain to build up a vast countryside. If
there is interest, it is possible that I could hose(I'm in Columbus, Ohio) such
an event at my church some weekend this summer, likely in mid-late July.

I hear you on that.  I'm from Tennessee, and would love to get a castleLUG
(joke;) meeting sometime during the summer.  Geez - that would rock.  I figured
that I would buy big plastic containers and put my creations (the mobile ones -
like the Gryphon's Nest) into a blanket.  Minifigures would be in a tub of their
own, and when setting them up, I would use baseplates (with tape on the bottom -
"Pawel's figs" or something like that).

I'm off to GA this weekend (DixieLUG), and that will be a test of moving my
creations by car.  But yeah ... let's keep the idea alive (if we plan early
enough, we might be actually able to pull this off).

Well, if LEGO Direct comes through, we'll be ordering bulk grey bricks... Of
course with something the size of your modules, there is a weight advantage
to the castle wall sections. Of course there are the 1x5x5 wall pieces.

Wow that is a HUGE castle you have so far.  The final product will probably
weigh a ton!

I envy the fact that you have wall pieces built in twos lying everywhere,
under, beside, and above the table, ready to be put into use.  Same goes for
all the BURPs too!

Can't wait to see the final product.

I really think Pawel's reaction sums it up, or my version of it is,
WOW.

That's big and what you have completed looks good.

Modularity is good in this case, very good!
Keep it up Mike! (and Pawel and Eric and all the others...)

Mike (no, NOT the one with really neat big castle under construction
:^)
All other themes are just spare parts for Castle!

Very impressive Michael.  I love the immense size of it so far.  I like the slight
terrain change in the interior, makes it that more realistic.  You sure do have
alot of castle wall pieces.

I'm now finally working on a new castle, my first one one was about 48x64.  This
new one should be approx. 96x148 with accompanying town/country side making for a
total of 192x288.  The castle is about halfway done and I have 3 of the town
buildings done, kinda going back and forth building a little of each.  I don't have
any new pics up yet, hopefully soon.

Hear, hear!

Or at the very least, an insert to block the hole.

That is the largest lego model i have ever seen! It makes my warwick castle look
like a shack by comparison. How much do you think the model is worth? $1000? $5000?
$10000?

What I like with your castle at this point is the way you're using not
only grey, but also black and dark grey for the structure.  I've seen
many castles made using only one colour for the walls, and they look a
tad dull.

Let me tell you, make sure your creations *fit* into the plastic containers,
don't put them with one side in the air!
I once took my lego town house (er, mansion) by car. Actually, I asked my mom
to bring the mansion to me by car. Well, she isn't an expert on lego (now
that's the understatement of year :) and she tucked in the house in a box -
only prob, it was too big (built on 4 32x16 baseplates) and she put part of it
sort of in midair. The long and short of it is, it didn't survive much after
that... :-( Especially when we reached my Aunt's house with my amazingly cute
but unimaginabley terrorizing 3 year old cousin (three at the time that is)
and, well, the remains where plundered even more :-)

So be careful with your creations! We don't want anything to happen to them!
