Making round shields

I was looking at a pile of 20 2x2 round plates with the archer's target
design on them wondering what earthly good they are.  Since the only
official round shield looks like a trash can lid and is rare (rare =
expensive), I decided to use the archer's target as a shield.
Interestingly, I came to the same conclusions (looking back at previous
messages on shields) as others and used a 1x1 round flat ("dot") attached to
a minifigs hand, and then the "shield".  Works well, and the flat surface
makes it easy to paint or apply stickers/decals to.

Looking for other solutions, the 2x2 round radar dish works well, too.
Using a lightsabre blade cut in thirds makes a good handgrip and shield
boss.  The torchholder/raygun thingie makes a good classic double-grip if
you nip off the big round part - this seems more sacrilegious than cutting
up the light sabre blade.  Both look dopey from the side if you leave them
uncut, but your esthetics may vary.

Any other solutions?

I haven't released a picture yet, but I've created a weapon/shield combo.
Given to minifigs with my custom gladiator torso sticker, it looks really
functional.  What it is, is a spear, held about on third up from the blunt end,
with the triangle from the ends of the Star Wars Speeder Bikes.  I attached the
triangle onto the spear just above the minifig's hand, with the center corner
facing down, covering (and thus protecting) the minifigs hand.  It makes for a
nice looking weapon.  But then again, thats just me.

I came up with the same design.  it's kinda dark but check out the cloaked
fig in http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=66416 .  The women's
soccer team comes with two similar peices but they are round not triangular.
I also think they are smaller.  I bet you could use them to in the same
design to make a sheild/weapon combo too.  or some kind of buckler (I think
that is the name of the little parrying shields)

really bizarre
I made a similar shield about 2 days ago, but used a LEGO screwdriver to
provide the handgrip. The pint of the screwdriver is a little lower than the
shield point, but it looks cool.
the other ting I considered doing was using the long tubes you get on the
Gungan Patrol and cutting them into small sections, again it seems less
sacriligious than cutting up a _real_ LEGO piece.
I was hoping the triangle would clip to the wrist like a buckler, allowing
it to be used in conjunction with a bow, but it wont unless you partly pull
the hand out, which then falls off :)

I think I've got a few of those "trashcan" round shields spare (about 8-10)
from a HUGE collection I bought of some dude.  I'm still trying to get rid
of a lot of what I don't want (about 10 six gallon storage boxes worth) so I
can make some money back.  Once I'm done building all the sets that are
complete-able and auctioning them off then I'll see if there are any left,
Mmmkay?

I also found a load of crap amongst it all too.  You know the
stuff....Playmobile (yuk), Lego clones and fake Lego (it exists).  I did
find a very interesting sheild (presumably Playmobile)....it's clear, kinda
kite-shaped, bigger than a minifig and the handle is a perfect fit into a
minifig hand.  I thought *ding*....hey, I can use this a magical shield
instead of binning it.  I'll take a pic of it with a minifig sometime soon
and show you all what I mean......

Fascinating.  I like the odd playmobile or clone item, armor bit, or weapon
because it seems to add spice to things.  Sometimes it is fun to just make
your own out of common household objects (I have a regiment of soliders who
carry the tiny plastic spears you get in your sandwich at Aztecha restaurant).

I used a 2x2 round radar dish an half a white horn, to get a wild forest feel
to my druid character.

Bruce,

That sounds like a great idea, I'm going to have to give it a try.  I'll
tell you another cool shield you can make.  First you have to buy the Star
Wars Speeder bikes.  With that set you get a 4 peg long "wand" that is grey
but looks like the wand in this picture:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=71298

You also get two brown trianglular pieces with clips on the back.  Clip one
or two of these onto the wand and you have a triangular shield (with one
clipped) or a diamond shield (with two clipped).  The minifig grips the wand
as a handle.  It works really well!  These triangles also look really cool
clipped onto a spear.  It's like having a triangular buckler wrapped
attached to your arm while holding a spear.  You can find the triangular
brown pieces for cheap at brickbay.  Now if only Lego would make these in
grey.....

A number of people have mentioned the triangular piece now - and I socked
away at least 10 of the Speeder Bike packs (they are $5 at KB) so I have
some available.  The Light Sabre blade (unstarred wand, plain round stick,
whatever) as a handle is a good suggestion.

I'll give the triangle/diamond configuations a try.  Thanks for the
suggestion (and thanks to all others who made suggestions - I read them all).
