Using Stone Colors in LDraw/MLCAD

I would like to use the following colors in MLCAD:

1. Light Stone Gray

2. Medium Stone Gray

3. Dark Stone Gray

I have been attempting to find or create these colors in MLCAD, but I have not
been fully successful. I’ll also be rendering with these colors, so they will
need to work outside of MLCAD as well.

Anybody have any ideas of how to "get" these colors in MLCAD?

Thanks,

David J. Perdue

Hi David,

The only way I've found is to use some other colours for them and then remap the
colour definitions in POVray. l3p doesn't like the colours and converts them
completely wrong.

Hi David,

As far as I can work out, MLCad does not currently support the colours defined
in ldconfig.ldr. It doesn't seem to work for me anyway. But you can define
custom colours in your models, using the colour dialog you get by clicking
"more" to the right of the standard colour boxes, and clicking "define...".
These colours are not global however, and must be defined for each model. The
RGB values can be found here:
http://www.peeron.com/cgi-bin/invcgis/colorguide.cgi

However, if you want to render them using l3p, I'm not sure if l3p will
recognise those custom MLCad colours. So for that it's probably easier to do as
Tim suggested - use the standard colours in MLCad, and convert them afterwards.

That sure is the truth! POV was rendering one of the stone gray colors as green.

Thanks for the tip, Tim.

I found this link just yesterday or the day before, and I was glad to see that
the three stone colors were on it. Now I have the RGB values, although the RGB
for Dark Stone Grey doesn't seem to work too well.

However, if you want to render them using l3p, I'm not sure if l3p will

Light stone grey seems to be working well with l3p and POV-Ray. For now at
least. I think if I use that one and dark gray as a substitute for dark stone
gray--and maybe do some additional tweaking--that might be good enough for my
rendering purposes.

Thanks for your response!

In your LDraw install directory (usually C:\LDraw), there should be a file of
color definitions, ldconfig.ldr.  You can also find it at
<http://www.ldraw.org/library/official/ldconfig.ldr>.  This file includes RGB
values for colors, that might work better than the values on the colorguide
list.

I believe L3P recognizes the definitions in ldconfig.ldr, so if you use the
color-codes for the stone-grays, they should render correctly.

I downloaded the ldconfig.ldr file and replaced mine in case it was outdated.
There are two colors in the file that look like what I need:

0 !COLOUR Stone_Gray        CODE  71  VALUE #A3A2A4  EDGE 0
0 !COLOUR Dark_Stone_Gray   CODE  72  VALUE #635F61  EDGE 0

However, the color codes 71 and 72 do not work for me in MLCAD. When I open up
the color bar for a piece and type in or look for color 71 and 72, they show up
simply as "unused" colors.

Am I doing or reading something wrong?

Thanks,

David

MLCad doesn't currently use ldconfig.ldr but other apps should (l3p,
ldview, etc..) Specifying the number they recognise should be enough.

I'm pretty certain l3p doesn't recognise bley (or ldconfig.ldr) unfortunately.

That's correct. The "next version" of L3P will support it, as far as I know, but
it's impossible to say when that will be out.  LDView does support it, and
LDGLite might.  However, the current L3P does support 12-bit dithered colors
24-bit color definitions.

In MLCad, click the "Custom..." button on the "Select color" dialog, then select
"24-bit color solid" in the combo box, then select your color.  Alternatively,
just type the hex number from ldconfig.ldr directly in the box with a 0x02
preceding it.  So Stone Gray would be 0x02A3A2A4.  For transparent colors,
change the 0x02 at the beginning to 0x03.  If you do this, the color should show
up fine in MLCad, LDView, L3P, L3Lab, and probably LDGLite.

Victory! I used this method to get the stone colors, and everything is turning
out right. In conclusion, here are the three stone hex numbers:

Dark Stone Gray: 0x02635F61

Medium Stone Gray: 0x02A3A2A4

Light Stone Gray: 0x02E5E4DE

I've been following everyone's responses and deeply appreciate the feedback.
Thanks to the numerous people who responded to my original question!
