To all interested,

I'm well on my way to releasing a new version of LDDP (I figured 3 years was
long enough).  Anyone interested in test driving the new version, please drop me
an email (Willy you don't need to).

Well hell why not let you all give it a try...

Here's 2.0 alpha 2:

Note, there are some features that do not work or work as intended.  Most
notable are the model tree view and syntax highlighting.

This is very good news!
I especially like the new tabbed editor, much more practical.

Do you have a short list of changes/intended changes?

A few things I noticed so far (perhaps caused by the alpha status...)
- It is possible to open the same file several times. While this can be helpful,
it has played tricks on me (saving an older version and losing edits done in
another (already closed) window.
- I'd prefer (but that may be just me!) that when opening a LDraw file from
Windows explorer and an instance of LDDP is already opened it opens in a new tab
of that instance instead of creating a new one (and having to wait for the
splash screen to close - btw I'd like an option to suppress that wait...)
- LDDP should be updated to use the new coplanarity check.

I should also be able to find new features to add, if you think it's time now...

...and actually when doing that in the new version the file is not opened (a new
file in a new instance is created)

I'll add a check to prevent this.

I'll look into this

I'll also look into this.  Actually, I'm thinking about killing the splash
screen, thoughts?

This is already present and should be in the options.

Yes, but have a look here first:

I don't mind for the splash screen if it doesn't take time (I mean splash screen
display should last no longer than LDDP initialization code)

Yes, but have a look here first:

Ah - very interesting list! But of course I have a few things to add...

- A value select tool: if you double-click on a value it gets selected
completely, including minus sign, integer part, fractional part and dot.

- A line select mode. In that mode selections would occur line by line. Using
Ctrl this mode would also allow selecting non adjacent lines.

- Precision: LDDP should not round values except with the rounding function
(presently many functions such as the change winding or mirror does affect
precision).

- New building possibilities in addition to triangle/quads combination:
  * Build quad from 2 lines. Only quads planar enough would be allowed. If a
vertex is common then a triangle would be created
  * Build a line/condline between 2 triangle/quads (they must have 2 common
vertices)
  * Border a triangle/quad with lines
  * I would also like a quad to tri split, but since there are 2 possibilities I
don't see a good way to let the user choose

- The mirror line should also act properly on type1 lines. Perhaps simple
rotations around main axis could be added too? (might avoid some travels to
MLCad)

- LDDP should check for an external file change and propose to reload document.

Philo,

I added your wishes to mine but obviously mine will be fulfilled first ;-)))
In return you'll have to translate the GUI into French (for yourself, Tchang and
Guy for the case he shows up again).

Here's the next alpha:
http://www.pobursky.com/common/temp/lddp20a3.zip

Things that are known to be problems:
- Model tree view
- Syntax highlighting
- Polling may be broken
- Switching between tabs may cause the file revert dialog to popup

Could you please add the following:

LDDP builds a sorted model around the 0,0,0 point for X,Y,Z - but this is an
incorrect way to sort a model.

To do it properly, it should find either the bottom-most brick(s) in the
model or a baseplate if there is a part listed that would be recognizable as
a baseplate, and start sorting from there.

Otherwise LDDP builds a sorted model around a 0,0,0 points axis.  I've sent
you an email, however, I only realized after I'd sent it to you what my
problem actually is.

In short terms, LDDP is treating negatively placed bricks as being not the
bottom-most brick in a model.  It needs to account for negatively-placed
bricks, and calculate everything with a positive offset, then take back that
offset after it's done calculating.

Cheers ...

Geoffrey Hyde

I'm confused about this.  In LDraw, negative Y is up so the more negative a part
is in the Y direction, the higher it is in the model.
