This is really cool! The trans fig can also be used for Tron figs, if
underlit...or if they were compatible with LEGO minifig parts, there could be a
Star Trek transporter effect done with a blinky light.

From what I took from this post:

MOCs should not be placed in the lugnet.announce group, but just in the
lugnet.announce.moc group like you did. Im afraid that Im not seeing any
resemblance to Obi-wan, but that may just be because I dont grok Star Wars Lego
much :^)
BTW, how was this made? What did you use for the molds? Ive seen Lego bricks
used to make the walls of the mold when plastic modelers cast resin parts for
instance.

Ahoy mateys!
NWBrickCon is pleased to present a new theme this year: Maxifigs.
The idea is simple. Take your favorite minifigure and build it at ten
times the normal size. For most minifigures this is pretty
straightforward: take the instructions for set 3723
http://media.peeron.com/pdf/3723-1/1/
and adapt them to the coloring and patterns of your particular minifig.
Examples:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=814498
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1528286
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2483902
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=919869
Of course, there are other ways to make maxifigs:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2613982
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2356933
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1345178
(Note that the above examples are what I could quickly find on BrickShelf,
and I have no idea, for the most part, who the builders are. . .but it
would be nice if they came to NWBrickCon 2007.)
This year at NWBrickCon there will be a prominently featured table in the
Expo Hall for Maxifigs. Let's see if we can fill a table or two with 'em!
After you've built your maxifig (but by October 4th, please) e-mail me so
I can ensure room. Any registered attendee of NWBrickCon 2007 is welcome
to display a maxifig.
A word of caution: making a maxifig in the style of 3723 is not terribly
hard, but it does take time and a goodly supply of brick. I urge anyone
interested in making one to start early so as to ensure plenty of time for
completion and, if necessary, additional materials---an experienced
builder can adapt the instructions for the legs and torso to use most any
2x brick, but head and hands show the Lego set designers' love of L-bricks
and L-plates, and some normal collections will require creative use of
existing materials. The arms (in the official instructions) require lots
of plates or time-consuming optimization.
NWBrickCon is a annual Lego convention and exposition in the Seattle Area.
NWBrickCon 2007 will be October 5, 6, and 7 at the Seattle Center
Pavillion. For more information, visit

I wanted to be a bit more elaborate with the ring, but I didnt have enough
matching ropes on hand to construct more than one decent corner. If you look
closely at these photos, you can see that one of the red ropes is actually
translucent orange. It would be fun to stage some actual wrestling moves with
these characters though. Who wouldnt want to see The Pedigree acted out with

Now that LEGO has moved away from its all-minifigs-are-yellow policy for
their movie licenses, white people are depicted with pink minifigs, and
black people are depicted with brown minifigs, but what will LEGO do for
depicting Asian people (Shanghai scene in Temple of Doom), Indians (rest of
Temple of Doom), South Americans (opening of Raiders), and Arabs (Raiders)?
|
The Asian issue has been neatly postponed for a later date by the simple fact
that they are not going to be releasing any ToD sets in this batch. Three sets
will come from Raiders (two of which are unlikely to feature any minifigs
besides Indy, Marion, and maybe a skeleton or two), one from Last Crusade (just
Indy, his dad, and some Germans), and four of undisclosed nature from the
upcoming Indiana Jones IV movie.
Middle Eastern people will probably be featured in the truck chase set from
Raiders, the South American tribesmen will probably be left out of the boulder
set (Im guessing this one will be limited to just the section of temple
interior where the boulder was located), and for Indians, the same reddish-brown
color used for African skintone would be perfectly fine. I mean, when you think
about it, theres a wide range of brown skintones found among people of African
descent, from nearly black at one extreme, to pale enough to appear more
Mediterranean at the other. The same holds true for Caucasian skintones, which
range from those who are unable to tan at all to George Hamilton. And yet
theres only one LEGO skintone for each. Id not be surprised if they do a
median skintone (and not the horrible dark-pink they used for the NBA minifigs)
to cover the bulk of Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa, Latin America, and
the Pacific islands. Neither of the two current skintones would work for much
of those regions, but as far as minifigs go, the issue has never been forced
based on the casting of the current licensed properties. Star Wars was
primarily white, some black, and lots of funky makeup. Harry Potter was also
primarily white. Avatar is Japanese (which is a lot closer to Caucasian
skintone than what would be needed for the aforementioned regions). Spongebob
is irrelevent. Batman and that other superhero property are largely white with
a bit of black thrown in for background characters. And that leaves one
property that can give any clue what theyd do for a median skintone. Dora.
Oddly enough, both the Dora and Diego Duplofigs have their own unique skintone,
with Dora being somewhere between the two white skintones (current and NBA), and
Diego being perhaps a bit darker than halfway between the two current skintones.
Between the two, I could see Diegos skintone being more useful than Doras, and
given the recent policy to trim down the color palette I wouldnt expect to see
both used.
|
And of course: will there be an official LEGO Hitler minifig?
|
I think its safe to say no on this one. The only two confirmed sets that are
likely to feature any Germans at all are the truck chase (Raiders) and the
motorcycle chase (Last Crusade). The only appearance of Hitler in the entire
trilogy so far was when he inadvertantly signed the Grail journal in a heavily
crowded street. There wasnt exactly a lot of action in that scene, so all that
a set based on it would be is a section of city street and a press of minifigs
around them, and the only point in releasing that would be to release an
official Hitler minifig, which, hopefully, isnt high on their list of Things To
Do.
|
P.S. New element watch: if that CG Indy minifig is an accurate representation
of the final product, looks like weve got a new minifig whip, and new
minifig hat, and a first-of-its-kind over-the-shoulder minifig accessory: the
satchel.
|
Im sure it is accurate. I mean, look at the Star Wars line and how many
special pieces had to be crafted just to do it justice (aside from the
regretable 8-year delay on reasonably Star-Wars-y guns). Indy just wouldnt be
Indy in either a standard cowboy hat or a campaign hat, the old whip looks
better when used in its original purpose (a vine) or looped back on itself for
some sort of wagon/carriage driver, and as you so rightly pointed out, there is
no possible substitute for the satchel, aside from just painting it on the
minifig. I wouldnt expect to see many new weapons, though, since Indy always
uses a revolver, the scimitar already exists, and the tommygun (while entirely
inaccurate for a German soldier to wield) is likely to be used for any soldier
toting a submachine gun. This does bring up the interesting possibility of a
broom-handled mauser, which would be useful for both any German troops used in
this theme, as well as for Han Solo and Rebel pilots in the Star Wars theme.
|
|
|
Very interesting news! It raises all sorts of interesting questions. Besides
the WWII vehicles/weapons issue already brought up, and the question of how
these sets will deal with the swastika symbol so ubiquitous to the 1st and 3rd
Indy movies, here is what I am wondering:
Now that LEGO has moved away from its all-minifigs-are-yellow policy for their
movie licenses, white people are depicted with pink minifigs, and black
people are depicted with brown minifigs, but what will LEGO do for depicting
Asian people (Shanghai scene in Temple of Doom), Indians (rest of Temple of
Doom), South Americans (opening of Raiders), and Arabs (Raiders)?
Will each get their own new appropriate realistic skin tone? Will some be
lumped in as white (ie. pink) and other black (ie. brown)? Or will LEGO
not-so-subtlety dodge these issues by not avoiding making minifigs for
significant characters that would force this issue (as they did with Lando and
Mace for so long in the Star Wars line)?
And of course: will there be an official LEGO Hitler minifig?
We shall see.
-Brendan
