Hello,
I added a new folder to my brickshelf account for the buildings I am working on
and planning on bringing to Detroit to show on the TCLTC layout in July.
It is here:

So far I have 5 buildings done (they are facades only) and, I think, 5 more
about half way complete. I am particularly pleased with the sand red building
being that the part selection in this color is really limited. The store on the
street level is based on a bakery in my neighborhood called "Cookies". I walk
by it a lot but have never been in, or tasted anything from there. I hear they
have amazing cupcakes. I used to eat baked goods whenever I could but quit a
year or so ago. I indulge on occasion now, but rarely.

You just get better with every street. The sand red building works really well,
combined with (medium, Mearsk?) blue it gives a really subduded colour balance.
I like the use of the car grills on the black shop front too.

Oh baby, these are schweeet, Jonathan! You certainly take ashcan building to
another level. I can hardly wait to see them all in Detroit and take credit for
them when you are away from the layout;-)

Thanks! Yes, that is Maersk blue on the sand red building. And, glad you
noticed the car grills. I was walking through Soho and noticed that quite a few
of the cornices and architectural features of the older buildings were made of
some kind of metal with silver (and rust) showing where the paint had peeled
off. The car grill was the right fit for that for me.

You do deserve credit, bro. If it we’re for NMRA looming, I would probably
only have built one building in February, rather than all these.
Look for more from me in a couple of weeks. I have two more just about ready to
go. I am really happy with the cornices on these two forth-coming buildings.

Hmmm, well it cuts both ways.... by that logic, if it weren’t for me, you’d have

After finally managing to get a good look (with a quick spotlight) at these I
can finally comment :)
There's far too many lovely details for me to pick them all. My favourite bit is
the studs out on the sand red building. They work so well. I also really like
the dipping and rising row of studs forward 1x1 rounds above the door on the
light yellow building and what I can see of the first floor facade on the dark
orange and black one.
I have to say you keep upping the standard with these things. Please stop it,
you make the rest of us look bad :)

Thanks! I'm really pleased with the sand red building, myself. I wish I could
photograph black better. There is some nice detail in the first floor facade on
the dark orange building. Plus I was happy to use those huge windows as well.

Ah, those are building widths by stud. John gave me a certain stud length that
I had to fill on his layout for NMRA. That is my way of keeping track of where I
am. I wanted to build all new buildings for the show rather than bring things
from my layout that were already built.

the built in sculpting detail. Very castle applicable : )

I remember first meeting you and you were so modest about the things you build.
What I see is a great builder! These are no exception! Great work, I liked
seeing them, I am sure they will look great set up at the NMRA 2007.

These facades are your best work in terms of the color and proportion. I agree
with pretty much all the prior comments. The detail work combined with the
color combinations result in the most realistic buildings that I have seen with
the possible exception of some of the better structures at Legoland (of course
they have the advantage of the larger miniland scale). I think that perhaps
part of your success is the basing of at least some of your structures on
prototype.
A great job overall and I look forward to seeing them all at NMRA NTS this July.

Thanks, very much, Jim. I agree, basing these on prototypes really helps. Also, being around urban environments 24/7 obviously influences what I build.

These are nicely rendered, Jonathan,
As soon as I saw them, my mind took me back to when I was a kid and my father
was building his HO model railroad. His "downtown" area backdrop was lined with
plastic building facades just like these.
Yours are fantastic! Will you create a painted facade to go behind them?

I have many fond memories of going to train shows and displays with my dad as a
child as well. If I weren't into lego, I'd be into HO trains. My dad build my
younger brother and myself some tables to display our HO trains on as a kid.

Thanks again. I was thinking about a backdrop. I could paint it right on the
wall, too. I work in book publishing and know many artists and graphic
designers and have actually had a few of them offer to do just that for me.
I think it is just a matter of me putting my mind to it and getting around to
doing it. Which means, I probably won't. :o) I just don't know where the time
goes, but I don't seem to have enough of it.
