As seen at NWBrickCon 2005:
The
WMD is a moonbase module
that features cannons that really fire, controlled wirelessly using a Mana unit.
It rotates, elevates, and shoots 4 Technic arrows. Special thanks to David
Wegmuller for his help!

Way to max out the playability, Tony. I might have to dig out my manas too. My
favourite detail, though, has to be the minifig exposed on the top. It reminds
me of the early days of Lego Space.

This thing is my favorite operable MOC in memory. I think it has inspired a new
level of competition too.
Now only if generation 2 can be made to hit the town figs and not the space
attack force it is supposedly fighting with...

Bring it on, pal! Well just have to mechanize such MOCs as
Shaun Sullivans
handiwork!
TRAINSTRAINTRAINS!

Although the design itself is rather spartan, and dare I say, a bit bland, that
video of the WMD in action is awesome!
Id love to see a bigger, sleeker version of this. I think you could make the
turret a whole lot cooler by mimicking some present day tank turret designs. You
could even make a frying-pan type turret (like most Russian tanks have) by
radially arranging wing pieces. I did this recently for this
mecha.
Heh, I still cant get over that video. Its so cool to see an MOC that actually
works!

This is completely awesome, Tony! I can hardly wait to show this to my son
Ross-- he will go bonkers:-) I am going to suggest to him that he create such a
MOC using the new Mindstorms NXT for our Marsbase project. This automation idea
doms!

Glad you like it! I'm kinda hoping to have a couple of them duking it out at
the next NWBrickCon, but we'll see how that goes. Mindstorms has some distinct
advantages- particularly the smaller components. I don't have a lot of practice
with mine, though.

Ill admit that it isnt very pretty. But its a big step up from the
prototype. Heres a shot of it just after I got it working. This version uses
Znap flex shafts in a couple of places. Ew.

I love the loooooong barrels you put on your tanks. Neat stuff here. Im
thinking of doing another version, so Ill definitely keep this in mind. It
would definitely be nice if I could make it look better.

Hrm, yes, well...
Range is a serious issue. With about 6-8 feet max, you arent going to shoot it
across the room at distant layouts. I was fortunate to be able to hit the Train
layout at all.
The Technic cannon is a very simple device, and it fires pretty safe rounds.
But Im not going to improve its range much unless I remove the rubber nose
bits. I could go for something scratch-built and more complex, but frankly the
firing mechanism is the best-engineered part of the whole thing.

Wow, thats gorgeous. I see that it has a compressor... perhaps someone can
make an air-powered cannon that shoots Technic axles. Now thats a hazard!
Stop that, you!
