To All,
MichLUG did a new kind of event this weekend, called Contraption, held in
Roseville Michigan at the Eastin Hotel. I am not sure if any club has ever
done this before, but I think this might be a good way of having the space
and castle people have a way to display items, much like the GATS shows do
for trains. We had a great time, and are invited back for more! : )

We decided to build a futuristic space colony, maybe somewhere nearby, or
faraway, but we felt this was a good approach. We learned a lot from this
display, and will make a better one next time!
I am including what happened to me, so feel free to add thoughts, comments,
etc. Amy will post it on the website soon.
Friday – June 22, 2001:
I spent most of the morning printing out pictures for the display, they came
out real nice, and Rick Hallman did an excellent job with his models. I also
want to thank James Davis, the Blacktron guy, his site is www.blacktron.net,

I took half a day off to get there around 5:00PM, hopefully. I stopped by
Marshall, Michigan, for a liquid refreshment break, and saw a Shell Station
that looked a lot like mine! I would love to have a Coffee Beanery in it,
but I might not have enough room for it. Here are the pictures of that!

I drove up to Lansing, going through a whole bunch of construction zones,
and got to Lansing around 4:00PM EST. I picked up Tony Hedglen first, and
then Rick Hallman, and started back. We stopped by Staples to get some
copies of our flyer made, and were on our way to Roseville. It took us about
3 hours to get there, with traffic and everything, and we ended up getting
there around 7:00PM EST.
We went in the main lobby, and went upstairs, we ran into Kai on the way up,
and told us where to go. Unfortunately, we were in a deserted hallway, apart
from the main floor, but we talked to the organizers, and we should have a
much larger room next time, near the main part.

When we arrived there, Chris Leach, Amy Hughes, Kai Brodersen, Trevor Pruden
and his wife, Janet, were there already! They started going into my stuff to
finish the display. As per typical Scott fashion, after accidentally putting
shaving cream in my hair instead of gel that morning (I was tired after
packing and loading the Suburban up) was walking back out to get something
in the mighty Suburban, and walked full speed right into a glass plate
window, luckily I did not break it, but everyone had a good chuckle at the
interesting prints my face, my hands, and my watch and wedding ring made.
Unfortunately, we forgot the stops in the Monorail track, so Chris had to
get some and bring it in Saturday. We also met Amy’s friend, Rain, who
seemed really nice. Rick and I made a food run to McDonalds, and had
probably the worst and slowest service I have seen in many moons.

Anyway, we had lots of fun getting things set up, we had to get some more
tables, but with the small area, we could not have anymore. Another problem
we had was the fact that we, the displayers, were in the way of the items,
and there really wasn’t enough room to do anything about it, so it was a
little tight.

We adjourned for the night around 10:00~11:00PM, and left. Tony and I drove
up to Flint, and slept at my parent’s house. We tried to get a hotel room,
but it was 120.00 for one night!!, and only a single bed. No thanks!
Saturday, June 23rd, 2001:
Tony and I departed Flint around 8:30AM or so, and drove down. We stopped by
the TRU nearby and got some 3033’s just in case. We arrived around 10:30AM,
and started yet again. Rick, Amy, Trevor & Janet, Tony, Kai, and myself were
there. Peter Guenther came, and brought his awesome Blacktron 2 ship.

There were various people that came through throughout the weekend, nothing
like a GATS display or anything, but I saw a gentleman with a white Star
Trek Next Generation uniform, and he told me it was the Chaplin’s core
uniform. I thought it was really cool! : ) Shortly after Peter arrived,
there was a young girl who was our GOPHER, and she stayed in the room while
we went to breakfast / lunch / whatever at IHOP (International House of
Pancakes, I never heard of that acronym before, but oh well) We had a waiter
there, it was his second day, and we were a handful. : ) The Coke machine
broke down, but it was fun.
We wondered back to the hotel, and worked on various things. Trevor started
working on his ship, I started building a Futuron set I had, the Star
Defender 200, http://guide.lugnet.com/set/6932 , Tony was building some
various sets I received, Rick was setting up scenes in the colony. Spencer
stopped by and saw the display. Trevor and Peter went to a TRU on 8 mile, I
think Lindsay posted something about it last week, the 3552 Zsnap model for
3.90 and the Sith Infiltrator / Naboo Swamp set for 19.99. They bought some,
and told us. Kai had to leave also, so Tony, Amy, and myself drove over
there, I bought 5 of them, and Amy and Tony bought a few sets and the like
as well, they had some really old sets, and most of them were still full
price. Weird. We also went to Target, but there weren’t any good deals. We
drove back, and went to Meijer nearby, we found A-Wings for 8.00 and 6520
Arctic set for 15.00, so wee picked a few up, and went back to the hotel.
We went to dinner soon afterward, and decided to shut the door for a little
while. We went to Big Boy, and had some good discussions. : ) After a very
weird transaction with me AMEX, we headed back. Our GOPHER came back with
her friend and started building some stuff with the 3033’s, Rick and Chris
were already, and here is a picture of that:

We also flipped through my catalogs a lot, talked about anything and
everything, and left around 11:00PM. Tony and I drove back to Lansing, since
he had to go home that night, and I slept over there, I was too tired to

Sunday, June 24th, 2001:
I drove from Lansing to Flint, and then onto Roseville after seeing my mom.
The last day of the event was really quiet, we talked with one of the
organizers, and packed up. There were not a lot of people, so I think we
could have skipped Sunday, but oh well! We all talked extensively, and had
fun packing up my Suburban. We departed around 3:30PM. I drove Rick Hallman
back to Lansing, after getting lost trying to find the KB-Toys outlet, which
had a minimal LEGO area, with nothing good. After dropping off Rick, I
managed to get to South Bend around 9:30PM EST. It was along weekend for me!
We had a lot of fun at this event, I think the next ones will be better! It
was great event for MichLUG, and I am looking forward to more of them! : )

Those buildings were nice Scott. I like the Water Processing Plant. You
might want to try making the Fuel storage tank more cirular by getting a
compass and making a cirlce of wahtever size you want, then building inside
the circle's edge. It works for me.

The monorail derailed in the oddest place. Right by the glass in a space
where nothing would snag it. We theorized people were trying to make it
derail or that some peeps ran by, because it THUMPED like nuts up there.

Me and Peter were making spaceships of the mighty Star Trek. We made an
Enterprise TOS, a red klingon cruiser, a romulan warbird, a borg cube, a
cardassin cruiser, and a red Tie fighter. I made some various animals too
and Peter made a green cat. I made a blue skeleton too.

Hey, all the creations on display look great, wow some of these buildings
and giant space ships ar very cool. I'd enjoy doing a display like this.
More to come in the future I hope. Some of the creations there I don't think
I've seen before! I'm a Sci-Fi kinda guy! Did other people from the public
enjoy or relate to the creations you folks had? One time I displayed my
Robots at a Comicon Convention, I think the people we'nt used to seeing the
Artist standing next to his Creations. You'd figure the folks there would be
into that sort of thing, it was a mixed crowd. Anyway, I've done exhibits
and shows for years, but I never showed my Robots with other Lego Builders.
You guys are lucky.
Maybe I could join in on a future show with a Sci-fi related theme?
We'll see.....any way congrats on your displays! Good job.

It was really fun, even with a few of the problems, such as an out of the
way place, not enough room, etc. But it was definately something that is
pretty new for the LUGNET community. I hope more groups can do it,
especially for space and castle fans. I think castle would have fit right
in, with the fantasy element as well.

The response was really positive, we had a blend of traditional town adn
Space, so people would recogize it. We added soime definite future stuff
too, such as a compressed wate rprocessing plant, fusion reacotr, hover
cars, etc. I think we can focus more on Sci-Fi stuff next time, i would love
to build a huge space port next time.

I just want to express my appreciation to MichLUG for proving to SF fen
that LEGO really is still cool, even at our ages. I'm from Columbus (and
a sort-of member of BLOC), I was at Contraption for the first time and
stopped in the LEGO room several times on Saturday. My favorite was the
Gungan processor. :-) (And my wife, who was also there, told me that if
I bought as much brick as was in that room, she'd divorce me. <sigh>
(Not really, but she could tell that I wanted to take all of it home
with me. ;-) ))
Now I just have to convince BLOC that we can put together something like
this at Marcon...and convince my fellow Marcon concom members that it
would be a good thing to set aside a room for...

Well, the Blacktron capital ship is no more. About 1/3 to half of the
pieces have already become Ravenstone Keep, the centerpiece of my medieval
village. Check it out at http://www.gunth.com/lego/castle.htm --no pictures
of the keep but the Inn is pretty cool. This will go on display at the
church event and, if we have the space and think Castle is approp., future
SF conventions.
