Per Steve Witts LEGO Ambassador
nomination post, lets use this thread for nominations.
Please post here if you would like to represent the LUGNET community as a LEGO
Ambassador.
If you want to nominate another LUGNET member for the LEGO Ambassador program,
please be sure to get their consent before nominating them here.
Please have your nominees listed in this thread by Monday, 12 May (Midnight,
server time). I and some of the other current LEGO Ambassadors will assist with
putting your nominations together for a vote, and will also help gather your
testimonials for the 24 May deadline to The LEGO Group.
Play well!

Seeing as its so quiet here, I might as well throw my hat into the ring:
My name is Teddy Welsh. Im a 34-year-old mathematics professor in Westfield,
MA, and I would like to be considered as a nominee for Ambassador, representing
lugnet. I have a professional interest in the brick: I use Lego and Duplo
elements in my mathematics classroom, and I encourage the future teachers in my
courses to do the same. I am active on lugnet.edu, where I publish some of my
work. A typical example is here. Also check
out these
slides from a talk I gave in April.
Of course, I bring the normal range of themes (space, train, anything
community-oriented), clever hands, and strong opinions about the different
product lines, but I believe I can bring a valuable perspective to the
Ambassador program as an instructor pioneering new instructional techniques
using our favorite bricks.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have also requested nomination through my
local group, NELUG. I appreciate your consideration.
Respectfully,
-Teddy

Well since this thread seems to be going completely unnoticed...
I nominate Nelson and self-nominate myself.

Thanks, Tim, but I respectfully decline the nomination.
Since it is past the deadline, it seems that we have only 2 interested nominees
here on behalf of the English-speaking side of LUGNET:
1. Edward Teddy Welsh
2. Tim Gambort Gould
If anyone here would like to write up a testimonial for either of these gents,
please post it here before 11:59 PM (server time), May 17th. We will forward
your testimonials to TLG on your behalf.
Best,
Nelson

As a fellow member of NELUG, Ive worked with Teddy on quite a few projects.
Teddys role in NELUG has always been an incredibly positive one. Perhaps most
recently, for the past two years, hes taken on the task of organizing the
Moonbase display at the Brick Blast event in Middlebury, VT, with his own
quadruple-sized module as the crowning centerpiece (also shown at BrickFest
2006). It helped inspire local kids to build and display their own modules at
the following 2007 Brick Blast event.
I think the most inspiring work of Teddys to me was something I wasnt even
present for, however. As a math professor, Teddys worked in Lego to his
classroom curriculum for several projects. As a bit of a math geek myself, I
found his approach to teaching students about Calculus with Lego to be a great
way to get even college kids interested in what is often regarded as a rather
dry subject (sorry, its true!) and (I like to imagine) more involved in the
class.
All in all, I think Teddy would make a great addition to the Ambassador team-- I
think he could add a different perspective to the program, and I have no doubt
that he would do all of us AFOLs proud.

Although I have never actually met Tim Gould, I feel that I know him pretty
well. I cant think of anyone else who has as many posts and responses on the
LUGNET forums (possibly over 2,000 posts and responses.)
His LDRAW models and POV-RAY renderings are very well known throughout the LEGO
Community, and Im always amazed at his creativity in using odd parts to
accurately resemble the real-life model that he is duplicating in LEGO bricks!
Tim has also been a member of the LDRAW Steering Committee, and has contributed
greatly in the expanse of the digital LEGO brick. I have no doubt that many of
the LDRAW tools and parts files that I use would not be what they are without
him.
Though I cant speak about his LEGO related activities beyond what I have seen
online; what I have seen, in my opinion, makes him the best candidate for
nomination to a LEGO Ambassador position for both the LUGNET Community and the
LDRAW Community.
Good luck to you Tim, and many thanks for all of the great inspiration that your
models and guidance have given to us!
Most Sincerely,
Scott Wardlaw

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Thanks very much, Scott.
Id ask that the following sentence be removed as its not actually accurate. My
contribution to the parts library and software side of LDraw has been very
minimal.

I have no
doubt that many of the LDRAW tools and parts files that I use would not be
what they are without him.

And once again thank you.

I hope this is not too late, but I would like to see Doug Eaton reinstated as a
Lego Ambassador for the following reasons.
Doug has done a good job distributing information or questions from the company
to our club, Parlugment and the greater LUG community.
He has a genuine interest in the company and the quality products it puts out.
As an individual, Doug has always gone out of his way to help others both inside
the club and out.
I find him intelligent, articulate, supportive and very likeable.
Oh, and he plays well. :)

I think Tim would make a superb Ambassador for the next cycle. He is an active
member of many of the finest online LEGO communities, and a great guy in person.
He is also a good communicator (and excellent builder), who has a sensible head
on his shoulders.

On Behalf of Teddy Welsh Id like to say...
Ambassador Welsh, it just roles off the tongue. Teddys in touch with many
aspects of the LEGO universe. Of course, Teddy is a phenomenal builder, his most
obvious/often viewed masterpiecethe Notre Dame bridge that used to span the
Merrimac River in Manchester NHis on display as part of the Millyard project in
the SEE Science Center in Manchester, NH. Even more amazing than his building
prowess is his willingness to invite all comers to participate. For example,
Teddy volunteered to coordinate a Moonbase for BrickBlast 2006 and 2007, and he
invited everyone who created standards compliant modules to join his Moonbase.
Teddy joked that he isnt quite as uptight as some of us train guys. But wait,
it doesnt stop there! Teddy uses LEGO in his mathematics classes where he
encourages his students, future teachers themselves, to use LEGO in their
classrooms. He really has a lot to offer. As a talented adult fan, he knows how
to build, and he knows what makes the LEGO experience so valuable. As an
educator and a volunteer, he gets to interact with kids and pass on his love of
learning and the brick. Because of Teddys love of the brick and his knack for
working with people, I think he would make an excellent ambassador.
Sincerely,
Chris Masi
