My Space Theme Wish for 2001

Obvious really 2001: A Brick Odyssey I think I could manage the black oblisk But we need some new pieces to make the large round front to the spaceship. regards lawrence (24 years ago, 23-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

(...) Hmm... Kubrick wasn't really known for toy merchandising of his films, though. But who knows? Maybe we'll get Dr. Strangelove and Eyes Wide Shut tie-ins, too! 8^) Dave! (24 years ago, 23-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

(...) Maybe a HAL mindstorms expansion set that would force (do we really need to be forced) you to play with LEGO for hours on end for the greater good of the mission. Adam (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

- What are you doing Dave ? - uh, I'm removing your power supply brick - No, Dave, you don't want to do that Dave. (...) Good thing Kubrick was filming someone else's property then, eh? Though I don't remember seeing too many "Rendevous with Rama" licensed toys, either. Steve (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

(...) The film and cinematography owe at least as much to Kubrick's vision as to Clarke's, and it was by Kubrick's request that the original models and schematics used in the film were destroyed to prevent a cheap knock-off sequel. For that matter, (...) (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

Interesting thought, that, since the cylinder was, what, 50 miles long? Or maybe 50 km? I don't have time to do the math now, but what would that be in studs? David (...) (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

(...) Quite. In _The Making of 2001_ by Clarke, he relates how the book and the movie were written essentially at the same time by both of them, with Kubrick focusing more on script and Clarke more on prose. The book is by "Arthur C Clarke and (...) (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space, lugnet.off-topic.fun)

(...) Destroyed to prevent a sequel? Then how, praytell, did that morass called "2010" make it into the cinemas? (Or have I dredged up painful memories?) (...) You could electrochrome it, and make it into the Cosmic Ho-Ho from "Star Trek IV." At (...) (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

(...) Not too painful for me. In fact, the models and sets had to be painstakingly reconstructed from archival photography and notes still in existence, and only following the approval of Kubrick himself. Dave! (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

I think they meant to prevent a sequel with their models. And while the sequel was more or less not good and did come out, it doesn't look like it was created by the same team who did 2001. The designs in 2010 were done by Syd Mead and have a sort (...) (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

(...) Not to mention the sound effects in space! The only thing we heard during Dave Bowmans EVA in 2001 was his breathing, whereas we heard thruster fire and the deployment of braking chutes in 2010. Dave! (24 years ago, 24-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

What I found rather strange, though, was that after the astronauts boarded Discovery and released oxygen in the ship, they just took their helmets off and started breathing! Wouldn't the air be filled with bacteria from rotten food supplies or (...) (24 years ago, 27-Oct-00, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.space)

Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

Think of all the bricks it would be... But not many space bricks, it would be more like a town setup. The really interesting part would be the hull, with all it's mazes and strange places (if you've read Rama 2 you know what I mean). And the Node! (...) In addition, they'd turned the thermostat on his suit way up to preserve his core temp. I'm sure he couldn't have lasted long, even (...)   Re: My Space Theme Wish for 2001

(...) Yeah, bacteria can survive a lot of stuff. I wouldn't be surprised. However, I'd also assume that 1) if they're food bacteria, they're not going to really be a big problem, and 2) any food they had would be sealed, not stored on top of the (...)
