[ ... massively snipped but relevant to Life on Mars ... ]

This morning at breakfast I gave a 2001 catalog to my five year old son.
After he looked through it, I opened it up to the LoM sets and asked what he
thought.  He said "they are okay, I only like the ones with the real LEGO
guys (meaning minifigs)".

My only grip (And it's a very small one) is that the arms and body of the aliens
are robotic like and the head and legs are all soft and swishy...

The grip is in the Studio sets, not the Life on Mars sets.... GDR :-)

While it would have been nice if they had come up with some other way to
do the Martians, I think they actually look decent. They really don't
look that mechanical (any more than a minifig might be construed to look
like a person wandering around wearing an advertising placard or
something). The head and legs add a sufficient "organic" touch. Also,
the use of different color torsos and legs from the head and arms helps.

He spent most of his time looking at the small
sets from the Studios line, and in particular, likes the exploding bank set
and the set with the red car and ramp.

In regards to the latter, who doesn't! Those two sets are great! Quantity time!

I never got around to commenting on the Studio sets, but the exploding
bank is a nice set. One kind of nifty thing is that the two shock
absorbers (implementing TLC's usual "exploder") are red instead of the
usual grey. The only thing I would have liked to see would be a rim on
the underside of the roof so it is easier to position. On the other
hand, the set won't stay that way for long, when they go on sale, I'll
be picking up more (assuming the windows don't become available some
other way).
