Hello,
I have completed yet another NYC firehouse.
<http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=224648>
This one from 17th street in Manhattan. I had walked by this firehouse many
times and always thought it had way to much detail to be recreated in Lego. I
guess it would help if I had a picture of the real one, but I seem to have
deleted them.
John and Ross Neal and I walked by this firehouse when they were in town over
Thanksgiving. It was then that they told me of an exciting collaborative idea
they had (and, it happened to be something I was thinking about myself to a
degree, coincidentely).... John, care to elaborate?
Back to the building:
If you look just below the arches, above the windows, you can see Big Ben
Wheels. I just love how they look and hope to use them in future moc's. (I
actually have used them already . . . more to come soon on that)
This building is intended as a backdrop type building for use on a layout. It
is built hopefully solid enough to take with others on a plane without them
getting destroyed.
Comments are always appreciated.
Thanks for reading.

Sure, but first, great work! The BBB wheels nail that arch design nicely! And
here is a pic of you and Ross so graciously posing in front of it (they both
protested greatly after I kept
taking
pics of them together:-)
Well, for years I have admired Jonathan work, and it was a real treat when he
came up and introduced himself to me at the Philly show last July. After seeing
him there, having brought a few MOCs that he was literally only able to tuck
into his pocket, I thought how nice it would be to see his buildings at a show.
And then I thought: why not see if hed be willing to show them on the TCLTC
layout in Detroit next July?
We happened to be visiting relatives over Thanksgiving in NYC and I decided to
meet Jonathan there and pitch the idea to him, and he went for it:-) Soooo-
The TCLTC is proud to announce that Jonathan Lopes will be providing virtually
all (save one) of the buildings to be displayed on our
Thomas
section.
Yes, even our Spamcake Diner® will make room for Als Diner:-) The only
building we are bringing on that stretch will be our Chateau, which faces our
fountain module.
We are very excited about this collaboration with Jonathan and have been
building like crazy this Christmas vacation-- we are in the process of
completely rebuilding our Thomas section to make it even better than before.
And now with Jonathans buildings, the TCLTC layout is going to be KILLER:-)
I cant wait to see which buildings Jonathan decides to bring/build for the show
(I hope he doesnt decide to use
this plot on Faile St.;-) But what can I say-- the dudes an Ashcanner, so
who knows! :-)

Thanks! I wish my pic showed the BBB wheels better. They really look sharp.
Thanks also for the pic of the prototype.

Im really looking forward to this too. I promise not to bring that lot on

though. Well see.
Thanks again and very much looking forward to Detroit!

Nice work. Did you consider using BBB wheels in Light gray? From the picture
it isnt clear if the wheels are black or dark gray.
Thanks for choosing Big Ben Bricks for your excellent MOCs.

Thanks. I actually hadnt thought to use light gray. I wanted to use dark gray
to tie it in with other dark gray elements on the facade. Looking back, with
consideration for the shadows and all, light gray may have been more
appropriate.

As usual, great work from mr. Lopes. For the rest of us NYC nerds, this
firehouse is actually on 18th street, 1 block north and a hundred odd feet west
of union square. A good photo of the actual firehouse is here:
http://nyfd.com/manhattan_engines/engine_14.html
The funny thing is that I've passed this firehouse a million times and never
noticed just how distinguished its facade is compared against the rest of the
buildings on that block. I even work on this exact block and never noticed
it!!! I'll be sure to stop and check it out the next time I'm at my other job.
'Nuff respect Jon.

Ah, yes. I have this habit of knowing where things are by knowing what
buildings are on the corner of the blocks they're on rather than knowing the
actual street name/number. In the case of this firehouse, I actually know of it
because Rosa Mexicana is across the street and I know their magarita's quite
well. So smooth . . . .
