Today, I was looking at a 6761 with the thought of parting a few out. That set contains two parts that I would describe as a 1 x 16 tile with a raised serated edge lengthwise on the top. Examination of the bottom shows a p/n of 3228. Partsref tells (...) (24 years ago, 2-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) part (...) Yep. The non slotted ones are from sets that did not use it as train track, as the ties fit into the slots. I believe that 6761 is not unique in having pieces like this, but don't hold me to it! James P (24 years ago, 2-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) But why would Lego create a new mold, to continue making a part that worked perfectly well as it was? The change prevents the piece from being backwards-compatible with 4.5v track, and doesn't seem to offer any advantages in structural (...) (24 years ago, 2-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) <snippage> (...) (taking a shot into the dark) Might it have something to do with simplifying the mold process for that part. By elminating those 'thru the rail' slots, they now have/had a more simple molding operation. Same might be true of (...) (24 years ago, 2-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) I know a little. In considering how to mold a part you have to consider every concave surface carefully. Many things with concave surfaces can nevertheless be made with non dynamic two part molds if you choose the mold separation line (...) (...) I agree, any blue rail set has pieces like this... I always thought that the non-slotted rails in 6761 were the same design, maybe even same molds, as the earlier blue rails that did not clip on to the ties. However, I never checked the (...) (23 years ago, 3-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)

(...) No... (...) The old "blue" rail parts and the non-slotted "gray" parts are very different: Both ends of old "blue" track flange is tapered over a length simmilar to that of a 1 stud brick. This tapering (in a vertical direction) is normal (...) (23 years ago, 3-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)
