A good idea, but I think your numbers are too low. Heck, a train car's couplers,
plate, wheels, and bogie plate cost about half that alone ($25). When I imagine
what a good quality train car should cost, I think in comparable terms ie O scale
cars from model railroading. For quality stuff, you are in the $50-100 range per
car for sure. Locos can get downright nasty in price.
But to tell you the truth, I don't think you can make a cool train car with parts
*readily* available. My Hiawatha cars, for instance, don't use any particularly
rare pieces (except orange 1x4 bricks), just pieces that are darn near impossible
to get in sufficient quantity. I have spent literary $1000s to assemble the
pieces, but in bulk would cost maybe $60-70 (wild guess).
But then again, I am talking about an 8 wide 60 stud long passenger car. Maybe
you are right on for a smaller 6 wide. Your challenge sounds like a great idea
for an LDraw project! Man, I gotta get MLCAD! Say, is there anyone out there who
could burn me a CD of the latest version of MLCAD and parts library for a fee? (my
PC isn't online, just my Mac)
BTW all, did I mention that if owned LEGO, all of the trains in the new train line
would be 8 wide? (Or did you all just assume that;-)
