It's a long trek, but I think I'd come to Minneapolis to see a 2200'
train layout.  And if I came, I'd certainly bring my 60' of straight
track.  Y'know, I think there's enough people out there with 10' or
more of straight track, that this *could* be done.  It would take
pretty good organization, but it could be done...

And I don't think that regulators would be the limiting factor :)

I wonder if you could convince train clubs to each build a town or
village?  The main line goes straight on through at ground level,
but you could pull a siding off, make a loop, etc.  There'd
certainly be curve track to spare, if this was done with volunteers.

Very interesting.

True, and it's also relatively easy to maintain or increase the
separation between trains:

If you've spent time running multiple trains on Lego layouts (and
seeing as I'm replying to Larry, I assume you have :), you know that
you can add or subtract distance between trains on the same block
just by varying the power level as each train approaches the power
attachment point.  Low power favours trains near the power coupling,
and lighter trains in general.

My general observation, is that if you let the general public control
the power on a block, that trains will collide regardless of
precautions, because people like to see trains collide.  It's
in our blood, or something.  I had a layout at our company
Christmas party: 58' of track, two trains, one block;  People
would struggle trying to make the trains collide...

Oh, one more observation.  I've found that if you put the power
coupling near the "upstream" ends of the blocks, two similar trains
will tend to keep their separation.
