After years of saying that I’d do it, I’ve finally started on my home layout.

A man after my own heart! I love yards, love designing yards. You have covered all the basic functions in a nice compact model.

Heh. Compact is a relative term. It barely fits between the basement wall and the stairway. :-) I could actually make it smaller, but I designed it around the A/D track, which I made just long enough to hold the Adventurer’s train that I built a few years ago. I also wanted the yard to be large enough to hold my rolling stock in between train shows.

The n-scale version, however, fits nicely on a table.

The car card system will be a lot of fun. I’ve always been a fan of “layouts with a purpose” -- producer/consumer industry pairs -- hopefully arranged in such a way that moving a “full” to the consumer and an “empty” back to the producer requires some interesting switching and a visit to the yard.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I need to do some more reading on car card and waybill systems to get a better understanding. I’m also thinking about adding in some random elements, such as washed out track or snow to give me an excuse to use my crane and plow. I like the idea of having random event happen that real railroads might deal with. I’m thinking this might take the form of a deck of event cards that get shuffled at the start of a session. Before I start running trains, I’ll pick a card off the deck and see if anything interesting has to be dealt with.
