   Hi,

Guess what I’m about to talk... : 6wide vs 8wide! no trolling inside :-)

I was reading Jeramy’s blog and more precisely this post :

http://indylug.org/blogs/jeramyspurgeon/archive/2006/11/02/The-Great-LEGOAE00-Train-Width-Debate.aspx

One could say the post by Jeramy is nothing really new on the 6vs8 debate. I don’t agree, for instance the talking about converting 8 to 6 is interesting and 8widers (hi John)

Bonjour, Didier!

will not worry as Jeramy ends with saying he sticks to 8.

But I digress and what I want to underline is that sentence :

“We (the train builders group) decided from the beginning to keep the trains we built in scale with what LEGO had already produced in the past, which was, for the most part, 6 wide trains.”

Let me first say I perfectly support their choice which is IMO logical for the project they were dealing with. (and from what I know, the set is going to be a huge success).

But I have a dream. I’d like to buy 8-wide trains (or even 10 but not more) from TLC. Kind of “Desginer Trains” theme. Kind of trains that could be sold without tracks and motors, just to be displayed on a shelf as a static model. Kind of sets AFOLs could convert themselves to run them on tracks. Maybe these sets could be sold quite well to “regular” railroad modelers the same way TLC sells sets to non-AFOLs SW fans.

Didier, I also have had this dream, but to be honest with you, I believe that AFOLs can build UCS sets better than TLG can as a retail set. TLG must above all worry about the bottom line-- that is, their primary concern is trying to create a set that will have WIDE appeal to the largest market possible to optimize profit. My primary concern is building a KILLER MOC™ (a VERY COOL MOC:-)

When I build a KILLER MOC™, I try to build it in such a way that it becomes almost impossible to recreate unless I want to break the bank (again;-) In other words, I spare no expenses (for the most part;-) Most of my MOCs cost $100s to build. I don’t believe that there is a market large enough out there for TLG to create a $300-$400 (and up) UCS train set, especially when you consider all of the new parts such as larger wheels that they’d have to (or need to, IMO) create.

But I am pursuing that dream in a roundabout way; I am in the process of building 12 wide, but plan on using G scale tracks, trucks, motors and couplers instead of trying to create them somehow in LEGO. If for power issue alone-- LEGO motors are not nearly powerful enough to handle this scale; they can’t even handle 8 wide! And the cost issue.

Yeah, I know I said that I spare no expense. Well, not really. Consider this section of track that Ross and I designed. Financially, it was (barely:-) okay for a section that will be 12 feet long, but an entire layout??? Put it this way: not even TLG itself created track out of LEGO (or motors or wheels or trucks) in the LL parks! So if using these parts used from non-LEGO sources is good enough for TLG, it’s good enough for me! :-)

So that’s my advice: forget TLG, and make your dreams come true! Build 12 wide bodies and use G scale stuff for the rest. This is going to be my new mantra for 2007:-)

JOHN
