These cars could be used with a Metroliner set, but they really deserve a
more fitting locomotive. So, I also worked up a LEGO Factory version of the
Super Chief, but now its an Amtrak EMD FL9 locomotive pair.

Jordan,
These are really cool. More fantastic additions to an already impressive
Factory gallery.
A couple suggestions on the already cool FL9.
1. Have you considered moving the powered truck to the front so you can add
the prototypical third axle to the rear truck? (I admit I havent checked if
the Factory palette has the right pieces to let the middle wheelset float so
a 3-axle truck can work in LEGO curves.) Im suggesting this because in my
mind having five axles is what really says FL9 to me.
2. FL9s also were a bit longer than their F-unit brothers because of the
extra equipment in them. If you extend the length a few studs it would still
be prototypical (relative to 10020) and make the length compression less
severe. Also might make it easier to move the powered truck to the front for
suggestion #1.
On a related topic, Ive mentioned before how much I like your
AEM-7. In a
previous post you mentioned you were
making a revision. Any updates?
Once again, great models!
Regards,
Paul

Thanks to all for your compliments and suggestions! Let me see if I can respond
to each of the points mentioned:
1) Interiors: Mine are fairly austere as well. With Factory MOCs being as
expensive as they are to order, I usually leave out some of the interior
elements and add those in later.
2) Vista-Dome mods: Id love to get rid of those obtrusive bricks on the end of
the dome. I think James Mathis way of doing things is excellent. Ill keep
playing around with this car to see what else I can come up with, because Im
not quite happy with my design as it stands.
3) Stripes are lower than on actual Amtrak Phase III cars so that these cars
will match the (LEGO) Metroliner ones better. And, the lack of 1x1 white or
blue plates in LDD makes it trickier to do window stripes as well.
4) Yes, I keep meaning to rework that AEM-7. Its a bit cluttered on the front
end, compared to the prototype. I think Paul is correct in noting the clearance
issues with the couplers. Ill have to post a revision for that sometime. Im
also thinking of some revisions for the basic passenger car.
5) Paul is entirely correct about the FL9s trucks, and I absolutely missed that
bit. Lets call the current model an F7. Ill draw up an FL9 shortly. I think
adding some length to the model will make the proportions more realistic as
well.
Good suggestions! It will take me a few days to work them in. Once I have some
revisions, Ill post some new pictures of things.
