These cars could be used with a Metroliner set, but they really deserve a more fitting locomotive. So, I also worked up a LEGO Factory version of the Super Chief, but now it’s an Amtrak EMD FL9 locomotive pair.

All models should be available for purchase through my LEGO Factory page after moderation: http://factory.lego.com/gallery/?parameters=2||0eb3f502-fae0-493b-a9f9-1d846e451a49

Until then, you can view the models in detail on Brickshelf: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/jordan/TrainFactory/

Comments welcome!

Thanks, Jordan

Jordan,

These are really cool. More fantastic additions to an already impressive Factory gallery.

A couple suggestions on the already cool FL9.

1. Have you considered moving the powered truck to the front so you can add the prototypical third axle to the rear truck? (I admit I haven’t checked if the Factory palette has the right pieces to let the middle wheelset float so a 3-axle truck can work in LEGO curves.) I’m suggesting this because in my mind having five axles is what really says “FL9” to me.

2. FL9s also were a bit longer than their F-unit brothers because of the extra equipment in them. If you extend the length a few studs it would still be prototypical (relative to 10020) and make the length compression less severe. Also might make it easier to move the powered truck to the front for suggestion #1.

On a related topic, I’ve mentioned before how much I like your AEM-7. In a previous post you mentioned you were making a revision. Any updates?

Once again, great models!

Regards,

Paul

(...) Thanks to all for your compliments and suggestions! Let me see if I can respond to each of the points mentioned: 1) Interiors: Mine are fairly austere as well. With Factory MOCs being as expensive as they are to order, I usually leave out some (...) (18 years ago, 30-Jan-07, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

Seems that James Mathis and I were thinking along similar lines this past week. I, too, designed some streamliner cars of my own using the LEGO Factory parts palette, although I modeled mine on the "Metroliner" paint scheme rather than for the Super (...)
